3 cardiograph (noun) Sentence:
After saving the children from the burning church fire, Johnny suffered a heart attack, and the doctor had to use a cardiograph to check the movements of his heart. Definition: an instrument that graphically registers movements of the heart Cardiograph app

4 demographic (noun) Definition: the qualities (such as age, sex, and income) of a specific group of people Sentence: The demographics of Ponyboy’s neighborhood show that mostly white, lower-middle class young men live on his street.

5 topographer (noun) Sentence:
If a topographer were to make a map of Ponyboy’s state, Oklahoma, he would show how the land changes from plains to mountain regions. Definition: A person who specializes in creating maps that show positions and elevations of man-made and natural regions

6 bibliography (noun) Def: A complete list of literary works used by a writer or researcher. Sentence: When you are writing a research paper, you must include a bibliography that lists all of the resources you used. Bibliography video

7 extract (verb) Def: To draw or pull out, using force or effort. Sentence: It is important to extract information from the book to support your answers.

8 retract (verb) Sentence:
Definition: to pull (something) back into something larger that usually covers it to say that something you said or wrote is not true or correct to take back (something, such as an offer or promise) Sentence: When Ponyboy saw Darry crying at the hospital, Ponyboy retracted any harsh feelings he had towards his brother.

9 protract (verb) Sentence:
Because Johnny was severely injured in the church fire, his stay at the hospital was protracted. Definition: To draw out or lengthen, especially in time.

10 detract (verb) Definition: Divert or distract (someone or something) away from. Sentence: To detract Bob from drowning Ponyboy, Johnny took out his switchblade and stabbed the Soc.

11 differentiate (verb) Definition: To show a difference in. Sentence: It is important to differentiate from the past and the present.

12 distinguish (verb) Definition: To point out a difference. Sentence: Distinguish between the Greasers and the Socs by the way the characters act, the way they look, and the places where they hang out.

13 SAT Word: remorse (noun)
Definition: a deep sense of guilt or regret felt over doing wrong Sentence: Johnny felt remorse for killing Bob, while Ponyboy felt remorse for running away from Darry. Remorse video

14 Literary Term: paradox (noun)
Definition: a statement that appears to be self-contradictory or silly but may include a truth that cannot be easily seen. Examples: “I must be cruel to be kind.” “Child is father of the man.” “What a pity that youth must be wasted on the young.”
