1 Seed Journal DAY 7 water tray??? (~ 3 minutes)
Cover your tray or will dry out at window Observations (see): color, new features, growth Measurements: (mm, cm) root stem leaf

2 AIM: Explain the characteristics of seed plants
AIM: Explain the characteristics of seed plants? OBJ: Given notes and activity sheet SWBAT describe characteristics of seed plants, how seeds become new plants and the main functions of the roots, stems and leaves with 70% accuracy DN: Seed Journal (~ 3 minutes); Cotyledon/Iodine (Demo) . Hand-in college style Photosynthesis in Plants lab ACT: Introduction to Seed Plants Text, Read p HW: Complete Characteristics of Seed Plants Booklet, Work on Plants Activity Sheet, Plants Exam, Friday, Oct 17.

3 Seed Plants Notes Vascular “tube” tissue (xylem, phloem) Reproduction by pollen/seeds Pollen (sperm cells) Seed: fertilized egg (embryo); structure containing young plant inside a protective covering (prevents drying out). Cotyledon: stored food for embryo

5 Seed Plants Seed Dispersal: wind (parachutes), water (ocean, river), fruit (eat/deposited), barb-like hooks on fur. Germination: after dispersal, fertilized seed (embryo) absorbs water, uses cotelydon to grow first roots, stem, leaves (seedling).

7 Germination of Seed Plants

8 PLANT PARTS AND THEIR FUNCTION
Roots: take in (by osmosis) water, minerals, nutrients from the soil, anchor plant into soil, stores food. Root cap site of cell division. Stem: transport (move) fluids throughout plant; support for branches and leaves; xylem (high), phloem (low) Leaf: site of photosynthesis (make food, autotroph); chloroplast: photosynthesis organelle; chlorophyll: green pigment stomata: leaf pore/opening for transpiration (liquid →gas) Flower: site of sexual reproduction
