First Part: Introduction Think of the introduction as having a funnel shape:  General statement (hook) Specific information Thesis

11 First Part: Introduction
States your position on the topic and sets up the structure for the paper. An introduction to an essay of this scope must be brief but to the point.

12 First Part: Introduction
The first sentence is a general statement, designed to attract the reader’s attention. 2. Second and perhaps third sentences narrow the idea down to your specific idea. 3. The last sentence in the introduction must be your thesis.

13 What I Have Learned from My Years at University
College life is going to come to an end in a few months. Now I’m in the battle field of TEM8 and coming across such question: what I have learned from my years at university? Maybe it’s a good chance to draw a conclusion for my college life.

14 What I have learned from my years at university
As a junior, I’m going to finish my college in less than a year and set up for my future career. Look back to these years in college, there is no doubt that I’ve leant a lot.

15 What I Have Learned from My College
College is pervasively considered as the most significant and influential period of life stages, where we master the skills to face the real world as well as our future. Four years being passed, every time when asked about my career planning, I know for sure it is still a puzzle. But here, in this cradle, I have been cultivated to be a qualified adult who is able to step into the society, well prepared. -----许仕哲

16 What I Have Learned in My College Years
College life is the most wonderful and unforgettable to every student, which is a golden period for the pursuit of knowledge, for our mental growth, and for communication skills. It is also a preparation for our future lives. Personally, there are only a few months before my graduation. Looking back to the years I spent in college, I have got great improvement in my professional knowledge, I have got strong will and independence, and I have got the skill of getting along with others.

17 Second part: Support the Thesis Statement
Support your thesis with examples/reasons. (or more if that argumentative essay requires more words, or if it is a more complex subject which needs more examples/reasons to support your thesis statement.)

18 Second part: Support the Thesis Statement
Preparing your Arguments Once you know what your arguments are in the second part, you will need to do research on the topic, to find strong and persuasive points or materials to support your arguments.

19 Second part: Support the Thesis Statement
Preparing your Arguments When preparing your arguments , think about the audience first. 1. How much does the audience know about the topic? 2.Is the audience likely to be friendly or hostile to your position? 3.How can you “hook” the audience’s attention?

20 Second part: Support the Thesis Statement
Building Paragraphs The first topic sentence of the first paragraph in second part will be the first reason that supports your position, which is of most importance. Topic sentence= topic + controlling idea

21 Kanchana is very professional in the methods she uses in begging for money on the streets of Bangkok. Topic = Kanchana is a professional Controlling Statement = the methods she uses to beg.  When you see this topic sentence, you can expect an explanation of HOW Kanchana is a professional.  What steps does she take?  The methods may be in chronological order, but they may also be different tactics completely which would be "topical" development. Kanchana

22 Second part: Support the Thesis Statement
Building Paragraphs In the second and third argument/example, you can use the argument/example which points out the flaw in the objection. Support your example with two details, using your research to strengthen your position.

23 Second part: Support the Thesis Statement
Building Paragraphs The final sentence in each of the three paragraphs should sum up and make a transition to the main idea of the next paragraph.

24 Third part: Conclusion
Are you happy with what you have written? Have you made a convincing case for your position? Is it clear that research supports your position? Is it clear that your position still outweighs the possible objections?

25 Useful expressions

26 Third part: Conclusion
Indicate in the conclusion that you have shown/proved the thesis statement to be true. Do not include any new information in a conclusion. If you have not mentioned something yet in the paper, it is now too late.

27 Second part: Support the Thesis Statement
After watch the video clip , please write down each of the three main reasons that support your belief on a separate piece of paper. These are your arguments.

28 Warm up activity Step one: video clip appreciation

29 Warm up activity Step one: video clip appreciation

30 Our earth feels hurt Our earth is crying, she begs us not to kill her.

31 Our earth becomes better and better
High tech has improved the quality of our life.

32 Step Two: Brainstorming
Warm up activity Step Two: Brainstorming Does human activity make our earth heaven or hell ?

33 Advantages 1.Numerous inventions, such as televisions, telephones and the internet, have greatly enhanced our quality of daily life, which makes the earth a real global village. 2. New techniques have bettered the medical service and health care system, which have improved our ability to care ourselves. 3.Modernized transportations have made our life more convenient and faster 4. Without human activity, human being might still live in caves and eat the crude food just like wild animals. ( ….and so on) Disadvantages 1. Deforestation endangers many animals, and mankind's great thirst for water and other resources leads to the extinction of many plant forms. 2. The development of transportations, such as the sub-way, has caused severe damage to the earth, just like what we have just seen from <2012>, some parts of the earth have sunk in. 3. The damage that human activity causes will eventually have a negative effect on people. They will also suffer the effects of pollution and diminishing natural resources. ( ….and so on)
