Advertising Manager By: Matty Harvey

General Description An advertising manager is responsible to create, put in action, and manages the company's advertising strategy, both from a business, sales and technical perspective. It is their job to initiate and manages discussions and sales with sponsors and agencies. They spend time negotiating agreements with outside sales representatives, managing the development of sales materials. As an advertising manager, you would be primarily working indoors, in an office building working with coworkers. As an advertising manager, you would be in charge of the advertising section. Of course, there are still people higher up than you but, for the most part, you will be doing most of the supervising.

History In ancient egypt, papyrus was used to make sales messages and posters. In the ruins of Pompeii and Arabia, there have been commercial and political displays found. After the invention of the printing press, advertising appeared more and more in the weekly newspapers. The amout of advertising again increased drastically when radio, then television were invented. Today we see advertising all around us, just look at Times Square in new york, or on your TV. Behind every one of those advertisements, is a hard working advertising team with a manager.

Working Conditions An advertising manager is a full time job, with hours varying depending on the workload. But typically, they work long, stressful days in order to meet deadlines. They typically receive payed vacations and holidays. They also usually receive full benefits, such as dental, medical, and a retirement plan. This is a non-union job. The median pay for this job is around dollars a year.

Future Outlook The future for advertising managers is very bright. Their pay is rising steadily yearly, and as long as people are selling things, there will be a strong demand for advertising for those products.

Related Careers Account Director - Leads client accounts for an advertising firm, assuring the client is happy. Account Executive – Acts as a bridge between the clients, and the agency. They ensure smooth running of client accounts. Advertising Photographer – Takes photos of scenes, or situations, or landscapes for an advertising campaign. Content Marketer – Looks for innovation and new ways to better market clients to the consumer. Art Director – Responsible for creating the look of the advertisement.
