A stretched picture of mine

2 DEFINITION: “The path of a point moving in any direction... Creates an infinite number of configurations.” LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEAS: Primary: -Get students to draw as many different lines as they can think of (varying in thickness, colour, straightness, direction, etc.) on a piece of paper Intermediate: -“While listening to different kinds of music, draw a variation of lines that captures the rhythm and feel of the music.”

3 SHAPE A fox I made out of geometry math manip= =ulatives

4 DEFINITION: “A two-dimensional image created with lines.” LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEAS: Primary: -Get students to cut out various simple shapes and glue them as they see fit on a piece of paper, making their own sort of collage Intermediate: -“Mold an organic shaped sculpture in clay, then carve geometric shapes into it.”

5 FORM Picture by me, pumpkins by youth group Clay pendants of mine

6 DEFINITION: “Three-dimensional: forms occupy space or give the illusion of occupying space.”
LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEAS: Primary: -Get students to build their own “forms” with Lego bricks Intermediate: -“Take a walk and pick up natural objects that have form, such as rocks, a fallen branch, a flower, a fruit or vegetable. Draw their forms. Then, draw the same forms in an abstract manner.”

7 COLOUR A painting of mine A drawing by Breanne Brandt

8 DEFINITION: “Experienced by the way light reflects a surface.”Also referred to as “hue”. LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEAS: Primary: -Get the students to make a simple 6-colour value scale, or “rainbow”, from purple to yellow, with pencil crayons or prepared paint Intermediate: -“Paint one 2x2 inch swatch of paper in your favourite colour. Place this swatch on ten different coloured sheets, patterned paper, or colour photographs and observe how colour changes when viewed on different backgrounds.”

10 DEFINITION: “The lightness or darkness of any colour.”
LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEAS: Primary: -“Make a value chart with pencil [or] charcoal that uses three values: light, medium, and dark. Then, make one with five values.” Intermediate: -“Using any colour of tempura paint, make a colour value chart that has up to ten values. Add white, a little at a time, to make colours lighter, and add black, a little at a time, to make them darker. Start with the pure hue…. in the center of your chart.”

11 TEXTURE A PowerPoint creation of mine A picture of mine
A fish printing of mine

12 DEFINITION: “An actual or simulated appearance… Evokes the sense of touch.” LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEAS: Primary: -“Create actual texture by making a “rubbing” or “frottage”. Place thin paper over a rough object- the sidewalk, street, brick, piece of wood, or leather and lightly rub a piece of graphite, crayon, or charcoal over it.” Intermediate: -“Make a watercolour painting of different shapes in different colours. Blot some of the wet paint with a tissue and dip a sponge into paint and use it as a stamp on dry painted areas to create simulated texture.”

13 A picture of mine SPACE A drawing by Breanne Brandt A sketch of mine

14 DEFINITION: “The illusion of depth and/or form on a two-dimensional surface.” LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEAS: Primary: -“Cut out people shapes, dog shapes, flower, or fruit shapes from different coloured paper in different sizes. Cluster them together in groups on a white piece of paper placing the larger ones below or on top of the smaller ones or both… develop[ing] a sense of space.” Intermediate: -“Develop a landscape drawing or painting that shows linear perspective using a barn, a fence, telephone poles, horses or cows, and a road as the subjects in the painting.”

15 RESOURCES DEFINITIONS from “Exploring the Elements of Art”, by Heather A. Pastro, in StARTing With… LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEAS from EDPB 501 Course Reader, compiled by Heather A. Pastro
