Synonyms of “analysis” include: interpretation commentary opinion evaluation Identifying the significance (i.e., the importance) of the quote “This shows that . . .” part of a paragraph

2 How to Identify the SIGNIFICANCE of the Quote
What does this quote tell/show me about a character/symbol/theme? (inference) Does this quote support my argument?

Context: George Analysis: George would have an easy life without Lennie.

5 Sample Response #2 **Better**
Context: George said this after talking to Lennie by the river. Analysis: George is mad at Lennie because he has to take care of him. They were just run out from their last job and now they have to find new jobs.

Context: George is speaking to himself after he reminded Lennie of why they were run out of Weed. Analysis: George seems to resent Lennie and appears to blame Lennie for their current situation. However, George and Lennie also share a common goal of being self employed. This comment really comes from George’s frustration rather than truly disliking Lennie.

9 Your Quotes - Focus your quotes and analysis on your main argument.
Always set the quote up. Make sure your quotes are varied – you’re not using the same “I got you and you got me…” for all 6 quotes. Make sure you cite correctly i.e. (9). Don’t just drop quotes! NEVER use the word quote in your paper.
