[#1] A central idea in the excerpt from the novel Dracula is that the narrator feels that he is at the mercy of some supernatural power. [#2] This feeling is shown both in the narrator’s descriptions of Dracula’s castle and of the host himself. [#3] One literary device in the passage that helps to develop this central idea is symbolism. [#4] Symbolism is employed more than once during the narrator’s (speaker’s) explanation for why he must now rely on his new crucifix, and his fixation on a religious object helps to support the idea that he feels that supernatural powers (mystical forces) are at play.
