2 Context Landlocked and liberalized economy
Agriculture provides almost 60% of export earnings and bulk of raw materials for industry Uganda currently accounts for 70% of the maize & beans trade in the EAC region FtF focuses on developing value chains of coffee, maize and beans through: Improving production and marketing (market facilitation approach) Combating counterfeits Improving policy formulation and implementation Expanding financial services through a donor-to-donor collaboration Helping to create a more-enabling environment

Policies, regulations and strategies Maize and beans quality standards Export procedures’ simplification Private sector market system approach has achieved scale and impact to build local capacity Vibrant engagement with private sector Strengthened National Food and Agricultural Statistics system Climate change adaptation fully mainstreamed in the activities Challenges Low on-farm productivity Counterfeits (50% of seeds and majority of agro-chemicals on the market are counterfeits) Poor quality agricultural produce Weak enabling environment for agricultural growth Uganda produce does not meet EAC quality standards Bulk of food trade through informal channels Poor implementation capacity of government
