3 What's News Interview? - A journalistic method of gathering information on newsworthy events, issues and personalities. - A News Int. is more than posing a series of prepared questions in a formal manner.

4 Types of Interview: News Int. : seeks to shed light on a certain subject of importance to audience. Personality Int. : seeks to shed light on aspects of the personality of the interview. The symposium Int. : to shed light on the views and attitudes of a number of persons with respect to a certain subject of significance to audience.

5 Forms of Interview: The spot News: conducted in person or by telephone for specific factual information for a news story. The feature Int. : conducted in person often being arranged by appointment to obtain information either on the personality of the interviewee or an issue s\he is associated.

6 Preparation for Interview:
don't be haphazard and offhanded without planning or preparation. Int. is not posing questions to get answers. It's not experience in interpersonal communication. You should know the interviewee and the topic.

7 How to carry out: Reporter should be serious about the subject.
Time – what can be obtained from other sources shouldn't be asked about? Preparation suggests important questions. Don't be ignorant or you'll be manipulated by the source. A well prepared reporter will have significant statement. Reporter can use the information to put a source at ease or to be tough, kind, and sympathetic.

8 Before the Interview: Develop the topic in its basic form.
- what is the specific topic of the interview? Extensive research should be done to acquire an appropriate background. - How much do I know about this topic? The most appropriate source for info. - Who could furnish me with the right answers to my questions? Establish contact with the target about the date and time. Is the target willing to cooperate with the reporter? Should prepare a list of preliminary questions - Do I know what I am after? Should identify himself or herself and the objective of the interview. - Do I know the interviewee well enough?
