Chapter 3

2 Epithelial Tissues Epithelial – the lining (or covering) of the body and organs Apical surface – the exterior surface of an epithelial tissue (near the white of the slide) Basement membrane – the lower surface of an epithelial tissue

3 Apical Basement membrane

4 Epithelial Tissues (cont.)
Two types of layers Simple – one layer Stratified – more than one layer Types of tissues: Squamous – flat (egg shaped) Cuboidal – cube shaped Columnar – column shaped Nuclei are arranged in a row

5 Epithelial Tissues (cont.)
Pseudostratified Pseudo – false Nuclei are scattered Transitional – Changes or transforms from one type of tissue to another; apical cells are lobed shaped

6 Location of Epithelial Tissues
Simple squamous – capillaries and air sacs of lungs Simple cuboidal – pancreas and ovaries Simple columnar – stomach and intestines

7 Location of Epithelial Tissues (cont.)
Stratified squamous – outer skin, mouth, and esophagus Stratified cuboidal – ducts of large glands Pseudostratified – windpipe Transitional – bladder
