2 What it Looks Like Red tailed hawks have: brown and white feathers
red tail with a little brown in it. Wing span is 4 feet Sharp, pointed hook beak used to eat it’s prey The beak is white with a blue tip White neck and brown head White legs Very sharp black talons They weigh up to 2.4 pounds The red tailed hawk is 17 to 22 inches

3 What it Eats A red tailed hawk is a carnivore
Red tailed hawks mostly feed on mammals like mice. Red tailed hawks are not picky about their food they will eat almost anything. Red tailed hawks get there food by waiting on a telephone post or some place high up so it can spot its prey

A red tailed hawk lives in lots of different places, all around the world Red tailed hawks can live in lots of different climates, they like it warm or cold, but prefer warm climates. Red tailed hawks need certain landforms like hills, mountains, and high places like telephone poles and trees to put their nest in They also need these high places to spot their prey Where it lives: A red tailed hawk can live anywhere it wants to but it has to have a high place to live in or nest in It also needs a tall perch so it can spot its prey It can’t live in the arctic

8 Behavior A red tailed hawk will sit on a telephone post for hours until she sees her prey They will also migrate very far. They like to live in warmer climates Red tailed hawks will also hunt at night to catch food, but they mostly hunt at day time They will often soar in the sky not to get food, but to cool off.

A red tailed hawk will shoot down like a speeding bolt from the sky and grab its prey A red tailed hawk will sit in a tree to blend in with the trees to protect itself from predators They shoot as fast as 120 mph going straight down The red tailed hawk can fly 35to 40 mph

10 Physical Adaptations A just born red tailed hawk is very tiny because it can crouch down so no one can see them Young red tailed hawks have brown wings. It’s tail is brown with black strips down it to help it blend in A mother has brown and white wings and her tail is red with a little brown, it helps it to care for their babies without anyone seeing them They have very big wings to help them migrate far They have sharp claws to help them hold on to branches They have big eyes to help them spot prey

A red tailed hawks’ lungs are rigid which helps them glide in the air Air is moved by nine air sacs which function as a bellows and help the hawk stay afloat. A red tailed hawks’ eyes change different colors when they get older so that they can continue to catch their prey even when they can’t see as well.
