1 Visit of CERN Summer Students François Grey CERN openlab for DataGrid applications 13 August 2003

2 PROGRAMME 10:00 Introduction to presentations and tour (10‘) Francois Grey  10:10 CERN openlab student programme - CERN opencluster (05')    Stephen Eccles  - openlogbook (05')    Antti Ukkonen  - Grid cafe (05')    Robindra Prabhu  10:30 Developing Grid applications: GRACE Project (15') Roberta Faggian  10:45 Experience with European DataGrid Project (15') Heinz Stockinger 11:00 Overview of forthcoming EGEE project (15’)  Bob Jones  11:15 Tour of Computer Centre (45') Charles Curran and Ulrich Fuchs Zetta (Z) 10e21 , Yotta (Y)10e24

3 Where will the experiments store all of these data?
Balloon (30 Km) CD stack with 1 year LHC data! (~ 20 Km) LHC data correspond to about 20 million CDs each year Concorde (15 Km) Where will the experiments store all of these data? Mt. Blanc (4.8 Km)

4 Where will the experiments find such a computing power?
LHC data analysis requires a computing power equivalent to ~100,000 of today's fastest PC processors Where will the experiments find such a computing power?

5 Computing at CERN Nowhere near enough!
High-throughput computing based on reliable “commodity” technology More than 1000 dual processor PCs More than 1 Petabyte of data on disk and tapes Nowhere near enough!

6 The solution: the Grid an emerging infrastructure that will provide seamless access to computing power and data storage capacity distributed over the globe Cool!

7 CERN: where the World Wide Web was born
Why is this interesting? The Grid is potentially a disruptive technology CERN: where the World Wide Web was born

8 Grid @ CERN CERN projects: LHC Computing Grid (LCG)
EC funded projects: European DataGrid (EDG) Enabling Grids for E-science in Europe (EGEE) Grid Search and Categorisation Engine (GRACE) Industry funded projects: CERN openlab for DataGrid applications

9 Sponsored by

10 Missions for CERN openlab
Testbed for cutting edge Grid software and hardware Industry consortium for Grid-related technologies of common interest Training ground for a new generation of engineers to learn about Grid

11 CERN openlab student program
student teams get hands-on experience with some of the latest hardware and software technologies for the Grid learn about how CERN and its partners are developing Grid technology for scientific and industrial purposes external lab visits and special invited talks
