1 Theory of Nursing Process Ida Jean Orlando
By: Kelly Stephenson and Leora Brown

2 Facts about Orlando Ida Jean Orlando was born in 1926
First degree obtained was through a diploma program Highest degree was a MSN Early practice experience includes maternity, medicine, and emergency department nursing Her theory was first proposed in 1961 and was called the theory of effective nursing practice Years later it was revised into what is now known as the theory of nursing process (Black, 2014, p. 277)

3 About her Theory Developed from direct observations of nurse-patient interactions Focused highly on meeting immediate needs Assessing and investigating presenting behavior to determine needs Relieve immediate distress and discomforts (“Ida Jean,” 2016) According to Orlando, nursing is achieved when the nurse is able to identify and meet the need of a patient (“Nursing process,” 2016).

4 How I Relate to Orlando’s Theory
Active listener Meeting basic needs Interacting on a personal level Providing explanations during care TREAT THE PATIENT FIRST! Orlando’s explanation of the beginning of her career

5 Conclusion Orlando’s theory revolves around the patient and how the patient affects the nurses’ decision making. When good assessments and observations are performed, good outcomes result. This makes care more individualized. Orlando’s theory leads to quicker interventions and outcomes. (Black, 2016, p. 277). Potential limitations to this theory include: -too much focus on the here and now and not prevention -acting before having factual evidence

6 The Future of Orlando’s Theory
Orlando’s theory will always be pertinent to nursing, especially in acute care settings. Is Orland’s theory derived from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs?
