4 Bell Work A recent survey shows that 65% of students like school lunch. If there are 800 students in the school, how many students do not like school lunch?

5 Vocabulary Decimal- a representation of a real number using the base ten and decimal notation. Deposit- an amount added to an account or place. Discount- an amount subtracted from the original price. Fraction - a number that represents part of a whole or part of a set. Number Line - a line on which numbers are marked at intervals, used to illustrate simple numerical operations. a ratio that compares a number to 100. Percent - Proportion - an equation that shows two ratios are equivalent. Ratio- a comparison of two or more numbers. Rational Number - any number that can be written as a fraction. Taxes- an amount of money added to a total bill. Tips- an amount of money given to a service provided as gratitude.

6 Today’s Standard Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent. 

7 Finding the Whole Essential Understandings:
To find the whole is an percentage equation, you will need to begin by identifying the part and the percentage. Example: Next, think “% of the whole = the part”. Use this verbal equation to substitute the identified part and percent. Finally, solve the one step equation by using the inverse operation (work backwards). Examples: In other words: Simply, divide the part the percentage.

15 Taxes and Tips Essential Understandings: Sales tax is an amount of money added to the finally cost of items purchased. In Hartsville, the sales tax is about 8% of the total purchase. To calculate the sales tax, you simply multiply the total by 8%. Then add the tax to the total. A tip is an amount of money given to a service provided as gratitude. Proper etiquette states that a tip should be 15% of your total. To calculate a tip, you simply multiply total cost of your purchase by 15%. Then add the amount to your total bill.

23 Discounts Essential Understanding:
Discounts are sales that make the finally cost of items purchased less than the original price. The service industry uses discounts to encourage shoppers to spend their money at specific locations, with the promise of big savings over their competitors. Unlike taxes, discounts vary by location and item. To calculate a discount: You simply multiply the original price by the advertised discount. Then subtract the discount from the original price, to determine the sale price.

30 A Night Out on the Town Today you will use your knowledge of percentages, to calculate the total cost of going on a date. Throughout the room you will various examples of things you could do on this date. Such as : see a movie, play paintball, take a trip to the zoo, play laser tag, see a concert, have dinner, etc… The price of each activity is listed on the flyers, as well as any possible discounts. It will be up to you to determine what activities you will participate in, and the final cost of this night out (including taxes, tips, and discounts). We will use a standard 8% tax and 15% tip for all locations.
