2 WHAT IS APHASIA? Aphasia is the inability to comprehend and formulate language.

3 THE SYMPTOMS… difficulty in reading , writing , understanding and speaking. He could also have anomia IT ALSO AFFECTS: Visual language Expressive Receptive language

4 Wernicke's Aphasia (receptive)
People with this type of aphasia: Often say many words that don’t make sence. May fail to realize they are saying the wrong words; for instance, they might call a fork a “gleeble.” May string together a series of meaningless words that sound like a sentence but don’t make sense. Have challenges because our dictionary of words is shelved in a similar region of the left hemisphere, near the area used for understanding words.

5 Broca's Aphasia Can have great difficulty forming complete sentences. May get out some basic words to get their message across, but leave out words like “is” or “the.”

6 WHAT CAUSES APHASIA? Stroke
Brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, and progressive neurological disorders. Damage to the left hemisphere Illness or injury Chronic neurological disorders, such as epilepsy or migraine

Aphasia is diagnosed through testing Initial tests may involve asking a person to name objects, answer questions and follow commands.

9 How is aphasia diagnosed?
A more extensive evaluation, usually done by a speech pathologist, employs in depth, standardized tests to assess the person’s remaining language skill.

10 What treatments are available for people with aphasia?

11 Treatments There are many different types of treatment, depending on the type of aphasia and the goals. The aim of aphasia treatment includes: 1) Restoring language abilities. 2) Strenghtening intact modalities and behaviors. 3) Facilitating generalization of skills and strategies in all communicative contexts.

12 Treatments The following are descriptions of several treatments:
Language Impairment-Based Treatment: A treatment approach that addresses all communication modalities. Computer-Based Treatment: Treatment involving the use of software programmes.

13 What can I do to communicate better with people with aphasia?
1) Get the persons attention before speaking 2) Maintain eye contact 3) Minimize background noizes

14 4) Keep voice at normal level and communication simple (simplify syntax).
5) Give him time to speak,use yes/no questions. 6) Encourage his independence.
