1 Pierre Cazelles Director – Partnerships Asia
ICA - Sustainable Energy Programs APEC EWG 50 – Honolulu – Dec 2015 Pierre Cazelles Director – Partnerships Asia

2 Who we are International non-profit organization
Established by the copper mining industry (in 1959) to create a sustainable demand for copper Copper Alliance members represent 70% of world’s copper production Promotes copper based on its qualities and competitive advantages: 100% recyclable Most efficient thermal and electrical conductor Reliability and safety of electrical installations/equipment Three major programs: Health and environment Building Sustainable energy (60% of annual budget) Annual membership fees: 70 million USD

3 The Copper Alliance Network
International network of non-profit organizations in 24 countries Headquarters in New-York In Asia: 3 offices in China (40 staff), Bangkok (4), Jakarta (2), Hanoi (2), Singapore (4), Taiwan (1), Seoul (3), Tokyo (2), Kuala Lumpur (1), Jakarta (2), Mumbai-Delhi (12)

4 Copper and Sustainable Energy
Copper is the most efficient thermal and electrical conductor (40% more efficient than aluminum) Energy efficiency and renewable energy systems imply more copper tCu/MW 2 4 6 8 10 Conventional power gen.: 1tCu/MW Industrial electric motors

5 ICA and international cooperation
grants obtained to date (8 million EUR in total) Power quality, higher efficiency motors, higher efficiency transformers, heat pump waters heaters, air conditioners, ISO 50001 UNDP/UNEP Global Solar Water Program ICA participation: 5 million USD Under development UNEP/UNDP/ICA/CLASP/NRDC In support of

6 ICA and APEC Six projects implemented in cooperation:
APEC funding: 750,000 USD ICA funding: 900,000 USD Other funding leveraged: 2.2 million USD Standards harmonization for Air Conditioners in ASEAN (Japan) APEC Distribution transformers survey (China) Enhancing MV&E capabilities in APEC (Australia) Capacity building for solar rooftop PV installers and designers (US) Electric motor repairs (CLASP APEC-SEAD) Heat pump water heaters (CLASP APEC-SEAD)

7 A successful story… 2010: UNEP-ICA study on energy saving potential in ASEAN for ACs and refrigerators: - Market transformation through increasing MEPS to EU levels would save 13 TWh electricity/year - Developed Strategic Framework endorsed by ASEAN ministries of energy (EE&C SSN) 2012: APEC funding for phase 1: harmonization of standards for testing methods (ISO 5151), led by METI-IEEJ (Japan)

8 A successful story… 2013: EU grant (1.8 million EUR) for phase 2:
- Partnership with UNEP - Steering by ASEAN EE&C SSN Country Chapters in each country (assembling key stakeholders) Regional policy roadmap developed by UNEP/CLASP endorsed by ASEAN SOME Capacity building for testing labs on harmonized standard National policy roadmaps under development Capacity building for AC manufacturers (local SMEs), and consumer awareness campaigns under preparation

9 A successful story… Under preparation: Phase 3:
2016: Launching of ASEAN-SHINE Lighting Chapter - Agreement with UNEP (en.lighten program) - Funding from Australian government - Kick-off workshop on 3-4 Feb 2016 in Bangkok Under preparation: Phase 3: - Harmonization of standards for CSPF (with Japan) - Expansion to other technologies (motors, transformers, solar PV, lighting) - With UNEP, IEA, others to join Under preparation (U4E initiative - UNEP): ASEAN-SHINE model exported to other regions to stimulate market transformation
