Why not use PE time to design a logo for the Morley School Sport Association? The winning design will be selected to represent the association that provides a number of competitive sporting opportunities for you during the year. Competitions This term we have hosted a number of competitions; The Year 3–6 Dodgeball competition unfortunately was cancelled as a result of the poor weather we received early this year, we have re-arranged this for next term, please see dates above. For the first time we ran a Key Stage 1 Multi-skills competition, this was very well received by all the children participating and the parents that attended. As with all first time competitions we have identifed one or two areas that we would change to make the event run smoother. The overall winners of this event were Westerton, with the highest scoring boy coming from Morley Newlands and the highest scoring girls, with equal points, were from Blackgates and Westerton. Also hosted this term was the annual Morley School Sport Association Indoor Athletics competition. This competition usually sees schools from across the local area compete for the coveted trophy. This year we ran the event in the same format as the Indoor Athletics, run by the School Games programme, and in order to do this effectively, we decided to hold the event over 2 nights (small and large schools competing on different night). The small schools competition was won by Birchfield, with East Ardsley in close second. Unfortunately, the large schools competition was postponed due to a clash with Thursday night football, this has been re-arranged please see dates above. The final event of the term was the Key Stage 1 Gymnastics Competition, this was run last year and the children enjoyed it so much, we decided to run it again. The children had to perform a routine with different shapes and movements in and were scored by our leaders. The overall winners were Westerton A Team and Blackgates B Team. Sharing Best Practice In this section of the newsletter we would like to continue sharing best practice with staff at the schools involved; Firstly, a number of our schools within the project are running Wake Up Shake Up style sessions at the end of most dinner times, in particular Drighlington and Morley St Francis get the whole school involved and use Year 6 pupils as leaders at the front. The leaders learn routines from teachers and then demonstrate to the other children. At Drighlington, the school is divided into house teams and whichever team puts in the most effort is rewarded with sports points. Well done, a great follow up to our article on Play Leaders. Secondly, some of the class teachers within schools are setting a fantastic example to their pupils by changing into PE kit for lessons. This not only sets a good example, but demonstrates good sporting habits for life. In particular, Morley Newlands staff each have corporate tracksuit, with the school logo on, which is to be worn when delivering PE lessons.
