2 Terms Realism: Tells the real story, talks like a reporter, no sugar coating, shares the dirty details Naturalism: nature is powerful and a means to escape reality, death is inevitable Disillusionment: American dream, reality may not always match dream Age of Anxiety: the world now has the capacity to destroy itself, therefore, there is a sense of anxiety and a need to escape reality Dialect: language used from a particular geographic region Satire: the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and critic people’s stupidity or vices Picaresque novel: genre of fiction that depicts the adventures of a roguish hero/heroine of low social class who lives by her/his wits in a corrupt society
