1 Newton’s 1st Law of Motion

2 Unit Standards 5.P.5A.1 Use mathematical and computational thinking to describe and predict the motion of an object (including position, direction, and speed). 5.P.5A.2 Develop and use models to explain how the amount or type of force (contact and non-contact) affects the motion of an object. 5.P.5A.3 Plan and conduct controlled scientific investigations to test the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the rate and direction of motion of objects. 5.P.5A.4 Analyze and interpret data to describe how a change of force, a change of mass, or friction affects the motion of an object. 5.P.5A.5 Design and test possible devices or solutions that reduce the effects of friction on the motion of an object.

3 What is Newton’s First Law?
Balanced forces- when forces act on an object without changing its motion. Balanced forces often point in opposite directions, and they always add up to zero. There may be more than one pair of balanced forces acting on an object.

4 What is Newton’s First Law?
The forces acting on stationary objects are always balanced.

5 What is Newton’s First Law?
Balanced forces can act on moving objects, too. Think of a bus moving at a constant speed down a straight road. The force of the engine pushing the bus forward is balanced by the force of drag, and the friction of the tires. Although the bus is moving, its velocity is not changing, so the forces acting on it are balanced. As long as those forces remain balanced, the bus will continue at the same speed and travel in a straight line.

6 What is Newton’s First Law?
When the bus speeds up the forward force is greater than the friction force and the car accelerates.

7 What is Newton’s First Law?
Unbalanced force- a force that causes an object to change its motion.

8 What is Newton’s First Law?
Newton’s First Law of Motion (Law of inertia)- An object at rest tends to stay at rest, and an object in constant motion tends to stay in motion, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

9 What is Newton’s First Law?
If there were no forces, such as friction or drag, an object in motion could travel forever in a straight line.
