New 9-1 GCSE: 40% more content More demanding content, more exam time, higher expectations (4½ hours compared with 3½ and more formulae to memorise). The new ‘benchmark’ grade (5) is likely to be the equivalent of old C+/B- Less scaffolding structure in questions – more problem- solving Less predictability of exam paper content and structure Students not having had the full benefit of new KS2/3 curriculum

19 ENGLISH EXAMINATIONS The English department offer two GCSE qualifications across KS4 GCSE English Language GCSE English Literature They are assessed separately and count equally for students In Summer 2017, there were only 5-6 marks between grade boundaries 10% of the marks could account for a shift of three boundaries

21 WHAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO LEARN FOR ENGLISH:
GCSE English Language: Unseen 19th, 20th and 21st century extracts Writing questions worth ½ marks of the GCSE – 40/80 GCSE English Literature: Closed Book Macbeth Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde or A Christmas Carol 15 poems – either Love and Relationships or Power and Conflict An Inspector Calls Unseen Poetry analysis, with unseen comparison

22 HOW CAN YOU HELP WITH REVISING ENGLISH?
Encourage reading – especially non-fiction Read around the subject All texts are available online for free Test on quotations, themes, characters, content Practise extended writing – depth and detail descriptions, narratives, analyses, evaluation Dialogue with English staff

23 YEAR 11 SCIENCE Students are either studying:  AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy  Students will be awarded 2 Grades based on a 17 point scale which will range form 1-1 to 9-9 is the highest possible grade  AQA GCSE Separate Sciences  Students will be awarded 3 separate grades

24 HOW YOU CAN HELP: Support in completion of homework
Test them regularly on subject content e.g. physics equations/key facts and terms Revision guides –please encourage them to use them Access to online resources Kerboodle Encourage them to take an interest in science in the world around them – watch scientific programmes, documentaries, news etc..

25 KNOWING ABOUT SUPPORT MECHANISMS – THE PASTORAL SYSTEM
Yr11 Team sees them on a daily basis. They are also either Maths, English or Science teachers Head of Year – Mrs O’Gorman – if any concerns re: homework, attendance, attitude etc. APC Mrs Osborne Mrs Morris – Senior Assistant Principal for Pastoral (Safeguarding Lead) Mrs Oliver – SENCO

26 INDEPENDENT LEARNING – HOW MUCH? WHAT CAN I DO?

27 REVISION Assessments must be taken seriously
Try different techniques, ask subject teachers – don’t just read notes! Find a quiet place to revise Be organised – have a revision timetable and stick to it! Read notes at the end of the day – this is a form of revision When exams are finished act on feedback from staff
