2 THE GEOGRAFICAL POSITION
Mordovia is situated to the south-east of Moscow, in the eastern, closer to the center, part of the East-European Russian plain. Mordovia is part of the Privolzhsky Okrug.

3 In the north and east-north Mordovia borders on the Nizhegorodskaya Oblast and the Chuvash republic, in the south – on the the Ulyanovskaya Oblast, in the west – on the Resanskaya Oblast. The border line in the south-east goes along the Sura.

4 RIVERS AND LAKES All the rivers of Mordovia belong to the basin of the Volga. The longest of them is Moksha. There are 364 long, small and very small rivers. There are some of them: the Sivin, Schoksha, Yavas, Sura, Insar, Alatyr, Vad and some other. There are many lakes in Mordovia. They are even more numerous than rivers, more than a thousand lakes. The largest and the deepest in the republic is Lake Inerka.

6 PRE-REVOLUTIONARY MORDOVIA
The Mordovian lands joined the Russian State after Ivan the Grozny conquered Kazan in Since that time on Mordovian people united its fate with the fate of Russia forever. Mordovia, as an autonomous republic, entered the Russian Federation in Since 1930 till 1934 it had been an autonomous region.

7 THE FLORA AND FAUNA The nature of the Republic of Mordovia is extremely various. You can find deep and thick woods of the Meshera, partially wooded steppe and black soil districts. There are more than 200 kinds of bids on the territory of Mordovia, including blackbirds, sparrows, pigeons, swallows; about 60 kinds of mammals, including the fox, the bear, the wolf, the deer, the elk.

8 SARANSK – THE CAPITAL OF MORDOVIA
Saransk stands on the river Saranka, which in 17th was called Sarley. Perhaps, the name of the city originated from the name of the river. In 1641 it was built as a fortress to defend the south-eastern boundaries of Russia of the 17th century from raids of the nomadic tribes. Though there is another version of the name of the city. The word “sara” in tatar in those days meant “yellow”. In spring and summer the fortress was in yellow blossoms.

Present-day Saransk is a totally new town as compared with old one. It is a town of modern industry, high schools, scientific-research institutes and new residential areas with modern conveniences and good amenities.

The economic development of the republic greatly depends on its economical-geographical position. The industry of the republic is basically presented by the branches of mechanical engineering and also by the branches using local raw material and minerals (processing of wood, manufacture of building materials, food processing industry.

A monument to the soldiers who were killed in the fronts of the Great Patriotic War of was set up in The sculptor and architect were N.Tomskiy and A.Dushkin.

22 The artistic images of the monument present a woman, a Mordovian woman, which symbolizes Mordovia and Motherland who entrusts a sward to her son who is a soldier. With this sward he would go and defend his motherland from the fascists.

26 THE PUSHKIN PARK IN SARANSK THERE ARE PLACES CONNECTED WITH THE NAME OF A.S.PUSHKIN. THE PUSHKIN PARK USED TO BE A SMALL TOWN’S PARK AND IN 1899 IT WAS GIVEN THE NAME OF PUSHKIN.

27 SPORT The success in sport can be built up only if there is certain “culture medium” in which new champions and new records can grow up. There is one in Mordovia. The Minor Olympic Games have been traditional in the Republic. Their aim is to attract as many young people as possible to sports and games and distract their attention from drugs and alcohol.
