1 RENISH THOMAS (GPM) Global-Precipitation- Mapper
EECS 823-FALL 2016 PROJECT RENISH THOMAS (GPM) Global-Precipitation- Mapper

2 PROJECT - outline Mission overview GPM core GMI-(GPM Microwave Imager)
DPR-(Dual Frequency Precipitation RADAR) Data Products References

3 Mission overview GPM is a system of satellites designed to map the Precipitation of the Earth , i.e Rain, Snow. The participating countries are USA, France, India, EU etc. Possible future contributions by Russian and Chinese Micro- Wave radiometers. The GPM Constellation which are placed in orbits of different altitudes and coordinates , maps the whole Earth in a time span of about 3 hours.

4 Mission DESCRIPTION GPM Constellation
.

5 GPM Core GPM CORE is a joint program by NASA (National Aerospace and Space Administration) and JAXA ( Japanese Aerospace and Exploration Agency).

6 Gpm core instruments RADIOMETER (GMI) : Gpm Microwave Imager: This is the primary instrument onboard, which is a 13 channel radiometer scanner, built by Ball Aerospace and Technology Corporation . RADAR (DPR) : Dual Frequency Precipitation RADAR: This is the Dual frequency precipitation mapping RADAR working in the Ka and Ku bands, built by JAXA.

7 GPM CORE SATELLITE

15 GMI –DPR BEAMSTEERING RADAR- BEAM STEERED USING 128 ELEMENT ACTIVE PHASED ARRAY- ELECTRICAL GMI- BEAM STEERED USING CONICAL SCANNER-MECHANICAL

16 WHY GMI AND DPR ? GMI PROVIDES THE BRIGHTNESS TEMPERATURES , BUT NO RANGING INFO DPR PROVIDES THE RANGING AND PARTICLE SIZE ESTIMATE THIS IS WHAT GIVES YOU THE BIG BUCKS $$$$ 3D MODEL OF PRECIPITATION

17 GMI AND DPR COMBINED DATA PRODUCTS
GMI +GPM COMPINED DATA PRODUCT GMI DATA ONLY

18 Analysis to do Calibration Mechanisms. How are the data products made.
Analysis of How the GPM core coordinates its data to create a final product. Pro’s and Con’s of the mission. Further improvements.
