2 Topics Image Formats Graphic File Types Types of Images
Importing Graphics Placing Graphics Image Options Permissions Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

3 Image Formats Bitmaps Made of pixels Also known as raster images
Resolution Number of pixels in image High resolution results in better-quality image but larger file Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

4 Image Formats Vectors Made of mathematically defined lines and curves
(continued) Vectors Made of mathematically defined lines and curves Can be enlarged or reduced with no loss in quality Smoother outline than bitmap Can be converted to a bitmap (raster) Conversion known as rasterizing Converted for use on Internet Cannot show gradations of color as bitmaps can Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

5 Image Formats Compression File formats for Web
(continued) Compression File formats for Web GIF JPG Download time on Internet Size of the file Type of connection Bandwidth – speed at which a computer can transmit information along a network Lossless – reduces file size without losing pixel information Lossy – reduces file size while deleting or changing pixel information Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

6 Graphic File Types File Format
Extension identifies software used to create document Images viewed on monitor JPG GIF Images viewed when printed TIFF EPS Illustrator (AI) Photoshop (PSD) Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

7 Graphic File Types Native File Formats AI CDR FH Adobe Illustrator
(continued) Native File Formats AI Adobe Illustrator Most commonly used vector program CDR CorelDraw Drawing or vector program FH Macromedia Freehand Vector program Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

8 Graphic File Types PSD WMF Adobe Photoshop
(continued) PSD Adobe Photoshop Used for creating and modifying bitmap images WMF Windows Metafile Low-resolution file that provides both vector and bitmap Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

9 Graphic File Types General File Formats BMP EPS
(continued) General File Formats BMP Usually used in word processing documents File size large Limited to 256 colors Works well in programs requiring Microsoft Operating System EPS Encapsulated PostScript General purpose vector file High resolution; used for printing Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

10 Graphic File Types General File Formats (continued) GIF
Developed by CompuServe Only uses 256 colors Small file sizes Used for Line drawings Images with transparent backgrounds Animated figures Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

11 Graphic File Types General File Formats (continued) JPG PNG
Uses up to 16 million colors Produces detail in photographs or graphics using blends or gradients Most often on Web rather than print PNG Retains all 16 million colors For use on the Internet Not supported by all browsers Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

12 Graphic File Types General File Formats (continued) SVG TIF or TIFF
Scalable vector graphics Designed for the Web Produced using HTML code Not supported by all browsers currently TIF or TIFF Large files Used in print documents Not compressed Shows 16 million colors Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

13 Types of Images Clip art Photographs Line drawings
Created as vector graphics Uses few colors Photographs Bitmap images Contains millions of colors Acquired from: Digital Cameras Scanners Stock Photos – library of images for purchase Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

14 Types of Images Art Work Choices Created for a specific purpose
(continued) Art Work Created for a specific purpose Created as vector or graphic image Not an actual real-life image Development can be expensive Choices Depends upon purpose Photographs Used in DTP documents to create interest Clip art Often humorous Creates light touch Less preparation Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

15 Importing Graphics Placing the image Fitting In
Create a frame to place or import the image into Let the image create the frame when you import or place the image Fitting In Software tools used to fit the image in the frame Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

16 Importing Graphics Frame Shapes Moving Not limited to rectangular
(continued) Frame Shapes Not limited to rectangular Adds interest to your figure Moving Reposition the image On the page Within the frame Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

17 Placing Graphics Floating Graphics Placed wherever you want Inline
Treated as if they are part of the text Image frame then moves with the text Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

18 Placing Graphics Text Wrap Standoff (Offset) Space
(continued) Text Wrap Flows around the bounding box Flows around the actual image Bitmap Text must wrap to the edges of the frame Vector Set to wrap to the actual shape of the figure Standoff (Offset) Space Amount of space between the image and the text Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

19 Placing Graphics Web Graphics
(continued) Web Graphics Images that are created for use on the Internet need an alternate description. This description is read by a screen reader for the visually impaired so that the Web page meets accessibility guidelines. Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

20 Image Options Drop Shadow Feathering Adds depth to an image
Gives a three-dimensional effect Can be any color Can adjust the side of the drop shadow (light source) Text and images can use drop shadows Feathering Practice of slightly blurring the edges of an image Image lines appear less harsh Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

21 Image Options Transparency Transformations Arrangement
(continued) Transparency Changes opacity of image Can combine two images so one is less visible than the other Transformations Rotated Scaled Enlarged or reduced in size Arrangement Place image on top of text or below it Stack images Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

22 Permissions Royalty-Free Images Copyright Licensing
Describes a work of art that can be used without having a pay a fee or royalty each time Copyright Protects those who produce work of art or text Copyright symbol does not need to be visible for protection Licensing Copyright holder can provide permission for use Seen most commonly in software Digital Desktop Publishing: Chapter 4

23 Assignments… On your own sheet of paper or index card, answer the following questions… Explain the advantage of vector graphics over bitmap graphics. Discuss the factors that determine the length of graphic download time from the Internet. Discuss the best file formats to use for those images that you intend to print and why those file formats are best. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using BMP images. Discuss the criteria that should be considered in deciding what kind of images should be used in a desktop publishing project. Compare the enhancement of images using drop shadows and feathering. Describe several transformations that can be applied to images.

24 Assignments Cont’d… Ch. 4 Activity #3 “Text Wrap”
Using your desktop publishing software, create a letter-size document. **Browse to your student data files and place the image pond at the top left margin of the document. ***Resize the image to 18p0 X 15p0. Fit the image to the frame. Select the image and wrap the text around the object. ****Browse to your student data files and place the file swans over the image. The text should wrap around the image. *****Browse to your student data files and place the file bkground at the bottom half. Resize and fit the image appropriately. ******Create a text frame with the text Swans. Change the font type, size, style and color so that it will attract attention. Move the text frame on top of the bkground image. Experiment with changing the arrangement of the two stacked images. Save the document as Ch. 4 Act. 3 or Swans

25 Assignments Cont’d… Ch. 4 Activity #4 “Native File Formats”
Using your desktop publishing software, create a default document. Insert a table with 2 columns and 14 rows. **On the first row, key Native File Formats. Merge the row. *** On the second row, key File Type in the first column; then tab to the second column and key Description. ****On the third and succeeding rows, key the file types in caps and add a short description in the next column (i.e. AI—Adobe Illustrator used for vector graphics.) *****Format all the type, including the heading, so that the table makes an eye-appealing appearance on the page. Adjust the column widths as needed. Center the column headings. ******Browse to your H:drive (my documents) then to DTP, Ch. 4 and PLACE the pink_flower image in the middle of the table. Resize and move the image in the middle of the table. Change the transparency to 40% on the iamge. Feather the image. *******Save the document as Ch. 4 Act. 4 or “Native_file_formats”
