Test taking is a process
Test taking is not a single event. Succeeding on a test involves preparation and strategy.

Before taking a test you should:
* Attend every class * Take good notes * Review notes regularly even before the test is announced * Ask your instructor what to expect on the test

The night before & day of the test
Get a good nights sleep Exercise Drink water and eat a healthy meal Get to class early

Test Taking Tips Read all instructions carefully.
Answer questions you know first. Use the test, sometimes valuable information can be gleaned from other questions. Try an answer all questions even if you aren't sure, it is usually better then leaving an answer blank. Look at the point value of each question and spend your time accordingly.

Strategies for Multiple Choice Questions
Carefully read the whole question. Look for absolute words like “always” and “never”, can you think of an exception? Typically you should take questions at face value, trick questions are rare on college exams.

Strategies for True-False Questions
Look for Open and Closed words in the question. Open words like “often” or “usually” are more likely found in true statements. Closed words like “never” and “always” are often found in false statements. Pay attention to statements with two clauses, both must be true in a correct answer.

Strategies for Essay and Short Answer Questions
Carefully read the question and break it into parts to make sure you answer the whole question. Take a moment to outline your answer and jot down key terms you want to include. If time allows reread and correct grammar and spelling mistakes.

Before You Turn in the Test
Make sure your answers line up with the scantron. Reread the test and check your answers. Complete any questions you may have skipped.
