1 Chapter Two: Sculpture.
From Egyptian to modern artists. The form changed radically and the meaning behind the work did as well. From conventions, to the canon and from Renaissance to Modern, man has expressed himself. Images went from representing a pharaoh to an abstraction of the figure to interpreting cubism.

2 First up Bernini’s version of David

3 Bernini’s St. Theresa

4 Canova’s Pauline as Venus
Created a Greek copy but used Pauline’s Head. In reality, she wasn’t very pretty but Canova created something she could imagine herself to be. Typical of the time for artists to re-create reality to enhance their commission.

5 Complex emotional works.
Rodin The Thinker Complex emotional works. Was an outcast in the art world. Criticized for his work. New form of realism. People didn’t know how to interpret his works of art. Considered a modern sculptor. Kissing in public was a no-no. Even in Greek and Roman times. It’s a modern thing to see people kiss. Mostly because it was a refined thing to do in private. (Rodin’s The Kiss)

Brancusi’s version of The Kiss It’s two lovers embracing. He was attempting to create an abstract work of art. His images are modern day icons, stating the “simple” with as little as he could and still make you understand.

7 Bird in Space Is another example of abstraction. From the 1920s to the 1940s Brancusi was preoccupied by the theme of a bird in flight. He concentrated not on the physical attributes of the bird but on its movement. In "Bird in Space" wings and feathers are eliminated, the body is elongated and the head and beak are reduced to a slanted oval plane. Brancusi's inspired abstraction realizes his stated intent to capture "the essence of flight." "Bird in Space" is the first in a series of seven sculptures carved from Marble.

8 Moore Reclining Figures Series
Was more like a landscape. Still recognizable as a figure(s) but highly abstracted.~

9 Smith The Cubi Series Gleaming stainless steel rectangles and squares of various dimensions are assembled to evoke the human figure. Between 1961 and 1965, Smith made a series of twentyeight sculptures that he termed "Cubi." The name, which Smith invented, links them to Cubism. Was one of the most innovative sculptors in America.
