In addition to using FANBOYS in compound sentences, you can also use a semi-colon to connect two independent clauses.
*The two sentences need to have something in common.
*You also do not capitalize the first word of the second sentence (unless it’s a proper noun).
Ex: Some people prefer Android phones; I am an iPhone girl.

5. Topic Sentence Development
This sentence tells your reader the focus of the paragraph. Your topic sentence MUST stay focused on answering the question. Don’t include your specific literary example in the first sentence.
Examples (weak to strong):
Loyalty means being loyal to those around you.
Odysseus is loyal to his men in the book, but not really his wife.
To Odysseus loyalty means giving up his own wants to ensure the safety of his men.
Being loyal means looking out for those around you in their times of need.
When we give our loyalty to another, we are committing to selflessly giving of ourselves in order to look out for the welfare and wellbeing of another. This commitment should not be made lightly as it will require personal sacrifice.
Take a look at your own topic sentence! Rewrite your topic sentence to make sure it is focused and clearly responds to the prompt.

6. Example Development
The example should be a specific scene or event taken directly from the text. Avoid general summary. The example MUST relate to the topic sentence and should be specific and focused.
Examples (weak to strong):
Odysseus is trying to get home from the Trojan War, and it has been almost twenty years since he’s seen Ithaca. His wife Penelope and son Telemachus are waiting for him at home. Odysseus saves his men several times throughout his journey. He saves them in the Cyclops cave, and he saves them with the Lotus Eaters. He also saves his men from the Sirens when he uses beeswax. There are many examples of him being loyal.
In Homer’s epic poem the Odyssey, Odysseus and his men face numerous obstacles on their way home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. As their king and leader, Odysseus takes responsibility for his men and remains loyal to them even during times of duress. When Odysseus’ men get transformed into pigs by the enchantress Circe, Odysseus has a choice to make. He can leave his men behind so that he can continue on his journey as quickly as possible, or he can go on a mission to the Underworld for Circe in order to earn his men’s freedom. Ultimately, Odysseus chooses to undertake Circe’s behest and travels to the Underworld to hear a prophecy from the blind prophet Tiresias.

Analysis Development
Your analysis is your commentary on how your specific example answers the question. Consider the following questions when creating analysis:
How is your example showcasing your reason / characteristic?
Why is your example important at all?
Without that characteristic, how would the individual in the example be affected?
Examples (weak to strong):
Since he leaves no one behind, he is loyal to his crew; they are also loyal to him.
Odysseus helps his crew because he is their king and leader. This example proves that loyalty is when you help someone else out.
Having not seen his wife and son for almost 12 years at this point, Odysseus might be tempted to cut his loses and continue on without his remaining men. It is, after all, their fault for being caught in Circe’s snare; however, a true leader must be willing to cast off personal wants and desires in order to do what is in the best interest of everyone. Odysseus risks his health and the future of his journey by undertaking Circe’s task, but he does so out of allegiance to his crew. They have fought side-by-side together for the last decade, and their bond is tried-and-true.
