Core Study 4.1: Milgram (1963), Obedience to Authority
Note Card 1: What was the context of Milgram's study? What global event sparked his interest in obedience? How was he personally connected to this genocide?
Note Card 2: Explain how the teacher and learner were assigned in Milgram’s study. How was deception a main element of the study?
Note Card 3: How were the participants recruited in the study? What do we call this type of sample? What sort of jobs did they hold, and what compensation were they promised?
Note Card 4: Explain “prods”; what are they, and what are they intended to do? List the 4 prod phrases in full.
Note Card 5: What are “headline figures?” What was the average voltage given to the participant? Describe the Qualitative data collected in Milgram’s study.

Core Study 4.2: Zimbardo (1973), Stanford Prison Experiment  
Note Card 1: Outline the induction procedure for either the prisoners, OR the guards. Explain this process fully.
Note Card 2: Explain how the design/procedure in Zimbardo’s study contributed to a “loss of identity” (1 long paragraph minimum)
Note Card 3: Discuss at least one quantitative, and one qualitative result of Zimbardo’s study.
Note Card 4: Define Individual and Situational explanations of behavior. Discuss how this concept relates to Zimbardo’s study, and strengths and weaknesses of each approach (1 long paragraph minimum)
Note Card 5: Discuss the ethical strengths and weaknesses of Zimbardo’s Prison Experiment in detail. Do you believe this experiment’s benefits outweigh the costs? What rules of Psychological Research were violated? (1 long paragraph minimum)

Core Study 4.3: Pilivian et al (1969), Helping Behavior/Bystander Behavior
Note Card 1: Discuss the background of the study, and the case/murder of Kitty Genovese. How does this link to Pilivian’s study on subway helping behavior?
Note Card 2: Define and explain the concept of “diffusion of responsibility.”
Note Card 3: Identify two features of the sample of participants in the study.
Note Card 4: Explain the “drunk” and “ill” conditions in detail. What do the results support? (IE: who receives help? What determines who receives help?)
Note Card 5: Explain how both Quantitative and Qualitative data were collected in Pilivian’s study. Is the study high in Ecological Validity? Why or why not?

Core Study 4.4: Tajfel (1970), In-Groups vs Out-Groups/False Discrimination
Note Card 1: How were the participants recruited in Tajfel’s study? Explain how the boys were split into groups in the first part of the study. This created the in-group and out-group; but were the boys split based on their answers…? Why or why not? (1 long paragraph minimum)
Note Card 2: Explain the questionnaire and the matrix used in the study. How does this work, and determine the “rewards” and “punishments” for the boys in one’s group, or the out-group?
Note Card 3: Outline two results from Tajfel’s study (RESULTS = DATA)
Note Card 4: Outline one finding from Tajfel’s study (FINDING = CONCLUSION DRAWN/LESSON LEARNED)
Note Card 5: Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the social approach to psychology using Tajfel as an example (1 long paragraph minimum)
