NDCS stands for the National Deaf Children’s Society Supporting deaf children and their families. Illustration by John Paul Early

3 Lets have a look at the fingerspelling alphabet now.
Fingerspelling is the alphabet used by people who use British Sign Language. Lets have a look at the fingerspelling alphabet now. British Sign Language is a way that some deaf people communicate and fingerspelling is how they show letters of the alphabet.

4 The British fingerspelling alphabet
There is a different sign for every letter of the alphabet. It means that you can spell out words using your hands.

5 What is the NDCS ? A sponsored fingerspelling event.
We will learn the new skill of fingerspelling. We will raise money for NDCS. Fingerspellathon is a fun way that you can learn to fingerspell and spell out different words. Your friends and family can sponsor you to spell different words. The sponsorship money that you raise can be used to help deaf children across the UK.

Outdoor adventure days Summer holidays Arts programmes NDCS organises lots of activities to help deaf children learn new skills, make new friends and gain confidence.

8 Some of the ways NDCS helps deaf children
Sports events Just £100 would allow a deaf child to borrow and test radio aids enabling them to communicate better with teachers and pupils and feel less isolated. Help with equipment for school

9 What will the money you raise do?
provides information and support for five people working with deaf toddlers. buys a vibrating alarm clock for the Listening Bus. buys a strobe smoke alarm that could save a deaf child’s life. buys a cricket set to be used at one of many activity weekends.
