1 ASSIST Smoking Prevention Programme

2 Why are you here?

3 We will increase your knowledge about smoking-related issues.
We would like to train you to be Peer Supporters so that you can help your friends to stay smoke free. We will help you develop the skills and confidence to pass on the information you learn to your peers.

4 Why are we doing this programme?
The health of young people is affected soon after they start. We know most smokers want to give up, but once they start it is difficult to stop. Adult smokers are more likely to have illnesses that: stop them having the life that they would like prevent them playing sport affect their breathing and their heart

cleaner air for everybody Some benefits of not smoking are… being fitter and achieving more in sport clearer skin, fewer spots and wrinkles more money to spend on other things, like going to concerts!

6 Living a LONGER and HEALTHIER life!!

7 What will the trainers do?
Help you gain new skills to make decisions. Make activities interesting. Listen to what you say. Improve your listening skills. Play games and have fun! Help you work on your team skills. Talk about health and smoking. Talk about health and smoking.

8 What will the peer supporters do?
Take part in 2 days of training and learn new skills. Keep a diary of the conversations I have for the 10 weeks. Attend the 4 follow up sessions so that the trainers can keep supporting me. Talk to friends in your year about smoking and its effects in and out of school. Try and give up smoking if you already smoke. Encourage students in your year not to start smoking.

9 What did students who have done the training say?
Best things: Standing up for what you believe in. The sense of achievement. Being able to help people. Working with others. Playing games. It was fun!!

10 How did peer supporters feel they had changed?
Better at discussions. More confident. More knowledge about smoking. Learned to listen to others. Understood and cared more about other people.

11 What happens next? Bring them back to school before the training
Take the medical and consent forms home Get an adult to sign the forms Bring them back to school before the training
