Apply for a PIN Fill out the FAFSA File FAFSA every year January 1st – March 15th

Full Time Fall / Spring Undergraduate Living On-Campus Tuition and Fees (based on 15 hours per term) $9082 Books (based on 15 hours per term) $1000 Room and Board (average) $9635 Transportation (average) $670 Personal / Miscellaneous (average) $1836 Total Estimated Cost of Attendance $22,223 Every school has COA Most costs the same except Tuition and Fees Control costs (examples) So how do you get financial aid?

11 Grants Texas Excellence Grant: UTSA Grant:
First degree-seeking Undergraduates Date of FAFSA is considered Graduated HS recommended or distinguished Have EFC of $4000 or less Must be a Texas resident Must enroll at least ¾ time Making Satisfactory Academic Progress UTSA Grant: Must be a Texas Resident Need based

Awarded to students with demonstrated need Funds are limited and paid as earned Student should coordinate with the Career Center to find on-campus employment Positions not guaranteed

14 Loans Subsidized Stafford Loan: Interest is paid by Department of Education while you are in school Maximum for freshman year = $3500 Unsubsidized Stafford Loan: Interest begins to accrue when the loan is taken out, so students must decide to make interest payments or allow interest to roll into principle balance Maximum Sub/Unsub combined per year = $5500 Parent PLUS Loan: Parent credit worthiness is assessed; repayment begins 60 days after the second disbursement Alternative Loan: Credit worthiness; Variable credit

Reduce Amount Borrowed Exhaust Federal Aid First Borrow Only What You Need Loan Portfolio Reduce the amount of loan money needed Submit FAFSA early  by March 15th increases opportunity for GRANT funding! Search and apply for scholarships, fellowships, etc. Exhaust Federal Aid first Federal Subsidized / Unsubsidized Stafford Loans Federal Parent PLUS Borrow only what you need Keep a loan portfolio Types of loans borrowed, and from what lender Cost of loans (principal, interest, and frequency of capitalization)

16 Satisfactory Academic Progress
GPA Maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA Course Completion 67% completion rate of attempted hours Maximum hours Maximum hours attempted must not exceed 150% of attempted hours 120 hours x 1.5 = 180! The ability to obtain Financial Aid is great, but it’s not an entitlement. To keep aid, you must meet SAP.
