2 What does HIPPA stand for? When was HIPPA created?
Involves privacy to all patients, and security for electronic billing. Increases patient rights Provider responsibilities Re: health care info

3 Benefits: Reduces inappropriate use of and the disclosure of information. Patients learn of their rights. Includes Disclosure Rights (who get the info) Must have a signed authorization

4 SN – How Does This Affect You?
Be careful of who you give info to. Never assume it is the parent or legal guardian in the child’s room or on the phone. Ask who you are speaking to and identify carefully visitors in patient rooms. Don’t look up info on computers

5 Your Role in HIPPA Use info carefully.
Verify the identity of any person seeking info. Report any violations to instructor or compliance officer. Be sure to shred old worksheets No printing of any patient information.

6 HIPPA Violations Doctor - suspended for two weeks and completed further HIPPA training. Unit secretary - fired.

8 Who gets the info? Parents/Legal Guardians NCH it is complicated
Use of Code Word Be extra careful - so many visitors (aunts, uncles, siblings, grandparents)

9 Your Role Never share your password/log off
Be careful in casual conversations All policies are on intranet

10 Is It Reasonable? It helps us get our work done and protects patients but it has it’s disadvantages. Disabled Long distance Caring neighbors, etc Be sure to refer to parents for info.

12 No eating, drinking, or applying cosmetics (even chapstick) in patient care areas.

14 Handwashing The best way to prevent infection How long?
Use gel or soap At NCH it is a must! Gel in/Gel out EVERY time: Between procedures No gloves on computers

15 NO SMOKING This is a no brainer for most of us, but NCH allows no smoking anywhere on campus. Mt Carmel SN’s

16 Requirements All SN’s must have flu shot and annual TB testing
If an incident occurs-must fill out computer report and it is a big deal! Be careful
