The Importance of Reading
‘Reading for pleasure at the age of 15 is a strong factor in determining future social mobility. Indeed, it has been revealed as the most important indicator of the future success of the child. That was the startling finding of research carried out by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development on education and reading.’ From the Telegraph ‘There is good evidence to suggest that young people who read for pleasure daily perform better in reading skills tests than those who never do.’ From The DfES

Reading for pleasure. Children who say they enjoy reading for pleasure are more likely to score well on reading assessments compared to pupils who said they enjoyed reading less There is some evidence to show that reading for pleasure is a more important determinant of children’s educational success than their family’s socio-economic status It can have a positive impact on pupils’ emotional and social behaviour It can have a positive impact on text comprehension, spelling and grammar. What works in improving independent reading? An important factor in developing reading for pleasure is providing choice - choice and interest are highly related Parents and the home environment are essential to the early teaching of reading and fostering a love of reading; children are more likely to continue to be readers in homes where books and reading are valued Reading for pleasure is strongly influenced by relationships between teachers and children, and children and families.

Reading Record Books Each child has been given their own reading record book. These books can be school readers, library books or books from home- anything that gets them reading. We are asking parents to complete their section twice a week and children as often as possible. If your child is a good reader who is able to read independently then we ask that you discuss the book, what has been read and ask your child questions about their book. We are desperately in need of adult helpers to hear readers so if you are able to help hear children read in school please let your child’s class teacher know. It is important that your child tries to read from a range of genres. Children should be encouraged to read quality texts including more older literature. Children need to be exposed to a range of language.

Homework in Years 5 and 6 Homework is set on a three weekly rota – English, Maths and Topic. Homework is set on a Thursday and due in on a Tuesday. Children are expected to know their tables off by heart when they come into year 5. We then focus on developing the speed of recall and the related facts as well as working on other aspects of their mental maths. Children will have Mental Maths suggestions for the term to work on at home. All children have log in details for My Maths – this can be used to go over topics covered in class. Children will work on spellings in school. We will do some spelling lessons and then review the spellings in a short test or dictation exercise every two weeks. Children could also work on these at home.
