Worship Through Song Colossians 3:15-17 Ephesians 5:17-21 May 28, 2017

3 Worship Through Song We are looking at “true worship” – John 4:24 5 specific acts found in New Testament: Prayer Singing Preaching/teaching Giving Lord’s Supper

4 Worship Through Song Colossians 3:15-17
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

5 Worship Through Song Ephesians 5:17-21
17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.

6 Worshipping God in Song Involves…
…Aesthetics

7 Aesthetics Aesthetics defined – those things which are pleasing to the human ear. Singing plays a part in a Christian’s happiness. James 5:13 - Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.

8 Problems with Aesthetics
Some exalt them OVER Christ. One who sings well and pushes singing to be done correctly. One who will NOT sing because if NOT being able to sing correctly.

9 Problems with Aesthetics
Those who believe they have no place at all. With out aesthetics there is NO song. How can the congregation be in unity if there are NO mechanics in the music? 1 Corinthians 14:40 - Let all things be done decently and in order.

10 Worshipping God in Song Involves…
…Aesthetics …Doctrine

11 Doctrine Singing doctrinally incorrect songs is blaspheming God and is just as condemnable as teaching false doctrine from the pulpit! Acts 2:42 - And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. This is just as applicable to singing.

12 Worshipping God in Song Involves…
…Aesthetics …Doctrine …Comprehension

13 Comprehension 1 Corinthians 14:15 - What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. When we sing we MUST understand what is being said if we are to sing it!!

14 Comprehension O Thou Fount Of Every Blessing - #545 – “Here “I raise my Ebenezar” Ebenezer – “stone of help” – 1 Samuel 7:12 O What Will You Do With Jesus - #626 – “That sweet voice speaks to thee” Figurative language – Jesus speaks to us today through His Word – Hebrews 1:2

15 Comprehension We are to think about the meaning of what we sing. If it is not correct we need to change it to make it correct or NOT sing it. “I Know The Lord Will Find A Way” – 32 yellow NOT Scriptural – rather let us sing – “I Know The Lord Has Made A Way”

16 Comprehension Here Am I Lord Send Me - #81 Think about what this song says. Isaiah 6:8 - Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: "Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me."

17 Comprehension Different songs have different purposes in the worship assembly. Opening Song – to help prepare our minds for worship. Lord’s Supper Song – to help prepare our minds to partake of the Lord’s Supper Song before the Lesson – to help us focus our minds on what is about to be taught from God’s Word

18 Worshipping God in Song Involves…
…Aesthetics …Doctrine …Comprehension …Attitude

19 Attitude Bible is clear on our attitude in worship. Colossians 3:17 - And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. 2 John 9 - Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
