Core Clinical Faculty; Director of Resident Clinical Skills I, II, III; Program Evaluation Committee Chair; Didactics Faculty Lead; Kaiser Permanente Napa-Solano Family Medicine Residency BACKGROUND Schedule AT-A-GLANCE At the Kaiser Permanente Napa-Solano Family Medicine Residency, we created a 5-week Orientation curriculum during which residents participate in targeted, hands-on educational sessions and workshops developed after close consideration of the unique challenges of the intern year. Simultaneously, interns are immersed in their outpatient continuity clinics where these skills are applied. This approach allows interns to begin their training with tools and resources to ensure their success. Curricular Elements conclusions Skills Procedural Workshops Dermatology Skills, IUDs, EMBs, Nexplanon, Prenatal Ultrasound, Joint Injections, Suturing Family Medicine Continuity Clinic Targeted Didactics Prenatal Care, Inpatient Prophylaxis, EKG Interpretation, Newborn Care, Common Inpatient Issues, Wound Management, Self-Reflection, Mentorship & Coaching Systems-Based Care EMR Training Quality Metrics, Coding, & Resource Utilization Experiences Community Immersion Community Scavenger Hunt, Local School Visits, Meeting Local Leadership 360° Experience Shadowing MAs, LVNs, RNs, Reception Staff Resident Bonding, Team Building Effective Patient-Physician and Physician-MA Communication Training Cultural Competency Inpatient & Outpatient OSCEs Residents reported feeling closer to each other and more comfortable with clinical faculty after the orientation experience Faculty perceived residents had greater overall confidence, namely in their procedural skills, after orientation sessions Residents felt quickly at home with the hospital culture and available resources Residents suggested future classes spend more time on dedicated community introduction and immersion, which is in line with our program’s emphasis on community involvement objectives Provide a comfortable experience where interns and faculty can bond early in the residents’ training Immerse residents in the culture of our program and explore resources unique to Kaiser Permanente Afford residents the opportunity for hands-on practice in procedural skills integral to inpatient and outpatient medicine Deliver sessions where high-yield clinical topics can be reinforced
