2 What is “history?” Past events of people arranged chronologically.

3 What is Chronological Order?
The arrangement of things following one after another in time.

4 What is a Historian? A person who writes or compiles a chronological record of events. Usually a scholar or expert in a specific history. Eric Foner, American Civil War Historian Samuel Kamakau, Hawaiian Historian

5 Primary vs. Secondary Sources?
Primary Source: An original material that is an artifact, a document, a recording, or other source of information that was created at the time under study.

7 Primary vs. Secondary Sources?
Secondary Source: A secondary source interprets and analyzes primary sources. Many times secondary sources are used to make learning easier as it may explain the original (primary source). - A history textbook (secondary source)

8 Bias Bias: prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair.

9 Ways “history” is passed on:
Written History Oral History

Written History Also known as “recorded history.” History where there is some sort of written record of a culture, society, etc. Sumerian inscription in monumental archaic style, c. 26th century BCE

11 Oral History Historical information that one gets from talking to people about their experiences, family, etc.

12 Culture a particular society that has its own beliefs, ways of life, and customs that is LEARNED. Examples: language, religion, foods, music, favorite color, etc. etc.
