2 WHAT IS A NEWS PRODUCER? If a newscast is a body: The anchors are the face The reporters are the arms and legs The producer is the brain The producer decides what the audience gets to watch

3 BUILDING A SHOW: The basic parts of a newscast
Stories come in different forms A reader a story without video the anchor reads the information no more than 15 to 20 seconds and used sparingly

4 BUILDING A SHOW: Types of stories A VO (pronounced voh or vee-oh)
the anchor talks over the video this type of story is no more than 30 seconds the script should match the video as much as possible

includes video and part of an interview related to the story VO stands for voice over SOT is “sound on tape” VOB it is bite as in sound bite the SOT should be not longer than 15 seconds long the total story should be about 45 seconds long

all of these married together PLUS the reporter’s or anchor’s voice recording to narrate the story packages are typically 90 seconds long, but length is determined by the content of story

7 SO HOW DO YOU PICK OUT WHAT THE AUDIENCE SEES?
Look for a mix of hard news and stories that are lighter in nature Most newscasts contain these categories of stories News Features Sports Basically it looks like this News at the top or the beginning Features in the middle Sports at the end

8 HOW TO DETERMINE NEWSWORTHINESS
Three criteria of a strong news story Timeliness Has your audience heard this before? Why is it important today? What is new in your story today? Impact Who is affected by the story? How many are affected by the story? Conflict/controversy Are there different sides at odds?

Feature stories Do not have the criteria of timeliness Placed later in the show to keep viewers watching Some of the most memorable stories produced

Sports stories Local sports take precedence over national sports Sports can also be news stories if they are timely and impactful Sports segments can also contain features
