1 Sewing A Puppet Level 3/4

2 LG: I can make a hand puppet character.
Success Criteria: I can learn and use sewing techniques (tie a knot, thread a needle and use basic stitches overstitch or running stitch). I can choose textiles and materials to add interesting detail and that helps to express my character and its traits.

3 Your character’s features
Choose which resources will be best for your character's features. For example: A pom-pom might make a good bunny tail, Eyes could be made from buttons, stitching, felt, drawing or googly eyes Feathers on a bird could be actual feathers or material.

4 Clothes The clothes you choose for your character will really help express who they are! Does your character wear a uniform, a ball dress, or a super hero cape? Choose textiles and colours that will enhance your character.

5 Accessories Give your character accessories (crown, bow, scarf, tie, hat, glasses etc.) to add detail and emphasise their traits! You could use sequins, buttons, material, ribbon or pom-poms…

6 Hair You can add hair using wool, felt, pipe cleaners or other materials. You can even plait or braid wool.

7 Steps to Sewing Puppets
Use your plan in your VAD to help you. Choose a colour for the main body of your puppet. Decide which resources to use for your character’s features, clothing and accessories. Cut out your character’s clothes. Lay all items on your puppet to check you are happy with placement and style BEFORE you sew or glue anything on.

8 Steps to Sewing Puppets
6. If you are going to sew items on to your puppet (e.g. it’s clothes, buttons, pom pom etc.) this must be done BEFORE you sew the back and front of your puppet together. 7. Sew your two sides together using a running stitch or overstitch.

9 What skills will I need for sewing?
I will need to know how to thread a needle. I will need to know how to tie knots (for sewing). I will need to learn how to do basic stitches (hand sewing). I will need to know how to make features and clothes using interesting materials (puppet, costume, prop, hat or head piece etc.)

10 I can tie a simple knot. 1. Make a loop near one end of the string
2. Feed the end through your loop 3. Gently pull each end of the string

11 On Weebly there are tutorials for:
Threading a needle using the needle threader Basic stitch – running stitch Basic stitch – overstitch Decorative stitch – blanket stitch Decorative stitch – French knot How to sew a button
