Community Service: The practice of volunteering one's time and talents to promote the common good and personal growth, while meeting actual community needs.  Service Learning: A teaching and learning strategy by which students learn through intentional and structured community service tied to specific learning outcomes and integrated through reflection.  4 min 1. Organizations: Non-profit Governmental Faith Based doing community work Community based grassroots Campus organizations In-Kind Contributions/Fundraising: Students may assist in fundraising activities Monetary or in-kind contributions do not substitute for service Participation in fundraising events such as 5K’s are not typically considered direct service. Community Service: Approved service activities: Supervised, safe settings Meet the needs of community residents Promote learning and foster civic responsibility Unpaid Does not include service to private families or individuals Blood donation Refer to Volunteer Guidelines on iServer 4 min 1. 5 Programs and Services iServe—Online volunteer recruitment, opportunity posting, and service tracking Service-Learning– Individual and group projects connected to course learning outcomes that meet community needs Connections and Support— Streamlined support, services, and development opportunities that build community capacity and connections to campus Engagement--special projects, civic involvement, Federal Work-Study Community Placements, and philanthropy 4 min

9 Service-Learning Process
CS&L solicits projects from partners (July/Aug, Dec/Jan) CS&L presents appropriate project ideas to students (September, January) Students select partners/projects of interest CS&L notifies partners of student choices Student(s) contact Partner to setup initial meeting (one student chosen as partner liaison) Student and Partner complete SL contract and student returns contract to CS&L Student completes service & logs hours on iServe Partner verifies service hours on iServe Partner submits SL evaluation of student service to CS&L (Nov/Dec, April/May) 4 min Go over process briefly highlighting importance of dates and details on forms.
