1 VIDEOGRAPHY AND AUDIO Using it the right way...

2 FILMING THE RIGHT WAY Always tripod everything - this is your mantra
Always use a microphone - plug it into the right channel Always walk your zoom - NEVER use the automated zoom to go from a wide shot to a tight shot

3 FILMING THE RIGHT WAY Always monitor your audio
Only pull the mic out when you want to gather natural sound (useful in producing and editing) Get the shot and keep shooting for just a few seconds more (useful in editing) Start filming before you want the editing point Give yourself room!

4 FILMING THE RIGHT WAY When filming people or a specific object USE THE RULE OF THIRDS (keep it out of the middle) Remember, always, that people are more interesting than objects Be careful of what’s behind your main object. Can you see yourself in the glass? Is there something more interesting than your object?

5 FILMING THE RIGHT STUFF
Look at it the way you want the audience to see it, from all different angles. Remember WALLDO - different ways to shoot the same thing Wide - walk back and go wider with the angle Angled - try a side shot or through a natural frame like branches or a banister Low - Worm’s eye view Linking - film something that relates to the subject or follow something to the subject Depth - shoot so that the background and foreground are equal Opposite - shows a non-traditional view of something - through a window, the view from the rearview mirror

6 HOW TO SHOOT WHAT Establishing shot - a shot that lets people know where you are… like when they show the outside of a building on a TV show. These are usually still wide shots

7 HOW TO SHOOT WHAT Interview - remember not to center, use rule of thirds, medium shots work best. Turn the subject in, eyes on thirds, leave headroom at the top and nose room to the side - NEVER ask them to look at camera YOU step to the side and talk to them so they will talk to you.

8 HOW TO SHOOT WHAT B-roll - variety of shots - this is where tight shots can come in handy

9 MIXING IT UP Just because you got the interview doesn’t mean you got the shot Keep rolling and talking Your prepared questions are just a guide Try WALLDO on each one of the shots WALLDO Wide WALLDO Medium WALLDO tight B-roll - get three times what you need Nat sound - get twice as much as you think you’ll need.
