2 TITLE Reading strategies: taking notes from written text. Active Reading: interact with your text

3 About the book This book written by (Stella Cottrell). And she talks about : ( The better ways of studying . And how do you improve yourself ).

4 Reading .. Page (22) - If you don’t do so already, start to read the quality newspapers. Jot down the key points for one things you read. Practice writing only a few key words, rather than writing in sentences or copying. - Read books that are a little more challenging than those you read now. Choose subjects that really interest you. - Read texts faster than you usually would, even if you feel you are losing some of the meaning. See if you can still grasp the gist of what is written. Being able to find the general meaning at speed is very useful to academic study.

5 For Reading :- (Intelligence can be developed). page (44)
- In Japan , the Suzuki violin talent Education Programme has trained many children to play the violin to virtusosu level. The programme begins with exposure to music from soon after birth , and involves daily practice from an early age. Even the less remarkable students perform to a level that in other culture would be considered that of a child prodigy (Gardner 1993). similar , children exposed to several languages from an early age tend to become multilingual quite naturally. people who start later in life can also develop into good violinists or linguists. the suzuki progamme suggests the importance of the belief that any one can learn to high standard.(Stella Cottrel). the same thing with learning reading.

6 Eight things you can do before starting at university. Page (21-22)
1- Familiarize yourself with this book(study skills handbook 3’D Audition). 2- Reflect on your past learning. 3- Read the literature you are sent. 4- set up a general information file.

7 Number 3. page (21) - Read anything the university sends you, such as a handbooks and subject guides. When to term begins, you will probably be too busy to read this, but the information they contain might be essential. next page…

8 Page (21) Look out especially for :
- details for course texts which you are expected to read for early in the term. - essential dates , such as for registration , enrolment, selecting options, induction week , meeting your tutors, fresher's fair, assignments , exams date , instructors offices…etc.

9 Improving reading speed. Page (120)
How to check your speed :- -Find something familiar to read - count how many words you read - if u read fewer than 200 words in a minute you are good.

10 Page (120) vary your reading strategies.
1- Inspect 2- scan rapidly 3- questions ( ask yourself about what you read). 4- read at the right speed and take your time 5- recall and review

11 Page (121). Strategies for speeding up your reading.
1- read more advanced texts (reading improves with practice). 2- know when to read aloud ( some people read out loud from habit. Reading silently can speed up reading in such cases). 3- keep your eyes moving forward ( check back over back what you have read makes understanding.)

12 References. Page (130) In academic writing, it is essential to state the sources of ideas and information. Such ‘references’ allow readers to refer back to the sources for themselves.

13 Page (130) there are main reasons for providing references.
1- acknowledging a source is a courtesy to the person whose idea for word you have used or referred to. 2- by giving the source you make it clear to the reader that you are not trying to pretend somebody else’s work.). 3- if you need to check something later , the reference will help you find it again more easily.

14 End We can be successful people. If we follow the learning strategies , there are many ways and many steps, but working hard and believing in ourselves always keep on right way.(Stella Cottrell). from (Internet).
