1 Gathering Good Water Flint Northern High School presents Flint River GREEN with help from Aversa , Bell , Miller-Helmholdt

2 Available Fresh Water 97.5% is salt water, 2.5% is fresh water
Nearly 70% of that fresh water is frozen in the icecaps The remainder is present as soil moisture and groundwater; not accessible to human use Leaving less than 1% of accessible water for human use

3 Every 8 seconds a person dies due to a lack of clean water.
Bad Water Over one billion people do not have access to clean water More than 4,000 children are dying every day as a result of diarrheal diseases 1.5 million children die every year, mostly from water-borne diseases Every 8 seconds a person dies due to a lack of clean water.

4 Why Help? Help because people can live about a month without food but only about a week without water. Help because everyone should have fresh drinking water. Help because no one should have to travel miles and miles just to get water to last them a couple days.

5 How to Help According to estimates by UNICEF and the World Health Organization, developing nations need at least 11.3 billion dollars a year to meet low-cost basic levels of service for both drinking water and sanitation by the year 2015 Donate/Help fund a well or anything you can to a foundation. Join a foundation that helps get water to unfortunate people.

6 Conditions Tested on Mill/Flushing and Linden/Flushing; the water treatment plant is between these two sites ~90% vegetation –Mill (Semi Residential, cemeteries, and high traffic flow) ~85% vegetation –Linden (Semi Residential, high traffic flow) Stormy weather for several days

7 FLOODED BASMENTS in Flint Area
Causes Sewer Blocked Up Cracks in Walls Machinery Pipes Leaking Solutions Pour Root Cleaner Down Drain Commercial Plugs Sand Pipes/Overhead Sewers Backup Valve Rain Garden Concerns Mold/Mildew -- Asthma Water Bugs Rust Stains Local Water Problems

8 pH Test (Total) This test measures the concentration of hydrogen ions. A range outside of 6-8 indicates pollution.

9 Fecal Coliform (Total)
High counts may show the presence of disease causing organisms; considered a high risk pollutant.

10 Nitrates (Total)

11 Dissolved Oxygen (Total)
If levels are too low only certain species will survive.

12 Total phosphate If large amounts are present it may cause an excess growth in algae and lead to eutrophication; considered a high risk pollutant.

13 Total Solids A certain amount is needed for aquatic life but high levels will have the same affects as high turbidity levels.

14 Turbidity (Total) Increased levels of suspended solids in water can increase water temperature, decrease photosynthesis, clog fish gills, and smother fish eggs.

15 B.O.D Measures oxygen use in the absence of photosynthesis. High oxygen demand indicates organic pollution.

16 Temperature (Total) High temperatures can decrease oxygen levels and cause aquatic death.
