1 STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY
CANTERBURY BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY

2 WHAT IS STEM ? Science Technology Engineering Mathematics
STEM is an acronym for : Science Technology Engineering Mathematics

3 ANOTHER DEFINITION We like to think of it as :
STUDENTS THINKING EXPLORING ANALYSING & MAKING This allows us to develop the 21st Century skills employers are looking for and that can not be achieved through artificial intelligence.

4 CHANGE IN SKILLS In 2015, Employers were looking for the following skills : Complex Problem Solving Coordinating with others People management Critical Thinking Negotiation Quality Control Service orientation Judgement and Decision making Active Listening Creativity

5 CHANGE IN SKILLS In 2020, Employers were looking for the following skills : Complex Problem Solving Critical thinking Creativity People Management Coordinating with each other Emotional intelligence Judgement and Decision Making Service orientation Negotiation Cognitive Flexibility

6 Trans-Disciplinary Approach
All subjects working and collaborating with each other for common learning outcomes. No Subject is an Island . Making connections between subject areas explicit. Skills are transferable. Learning that is authentic and relevant to the real world. Learning is not confined by traditional subjects but is supported and enriched by them. Teachers, when using this approach, do not compartmentalise learning,  but rather explore content within the context of inquiry

7 AN EXAMPLE Building and Racing a Billy Cart :
TAS : Learning about the Design Process Science : Speed and velocity, resistance and force Maths : Dimensions TAS : Construction of Billy Cart This means the students are working on a common project across these subjects They have an authentic, real life problem to solve They have to work collaboratively with other students Staff are working collaboratively on building common skills This builds trans-disciplinary links Students learn that subjects are not restricted or departmentalised – skills are transferrable Engagement is high as there is a lot of choice in various aspects of the problem but skills are consolidated in all subjects. Focus is on the process and the skills

8 What is the STEM Academy?
A funded project designed to enhance the teaching of STEM skills in schools University researchers, teacher educators and working engineers 13 schools chosen- only 4 govt. schools

9 What did we learn? Discrete workshops for each discipline in high schools- maths, science and TAS Connections between disciplines in STEM Inquiry-based learning Problematic knowledge and connectedness- QT framework

10 What are the STEM initiatives CBHS is planning for 2017?
STEM exposure for Year 7 and 8, including industry partnership through ABCN A new 100-hour STEM elective course for Year 9 and 10 students A Primary School STEM enrichment program – Ashfield, Canterbury, Summer Hill, Ashbury PS’s
