1 Mentor Text AP LANG

2 READING Students must read AND reread in AP LANG to develop the skills required (MC and RA) and create a storehouse of evidence and ways of thinking about issues and ideas (SYN and ARG) So using texts as mentors does not add an extra burden or loss of time

3 What you do with Mentor Text
Try to read once for the gist Talk-Aloud – noticing(as kids gain practice they can lead Talk-Alouds) Why did the author? What is significance of? How does it work? Look at craft of writing (purposeful moves of the author) for what stands out, find interesting, enjoy, etc.

4 As a Mentor: Reexamine one of their essays (or other writing) – notice and note one or two things that are (or should be) working to improve Reexamine noticings What would they like to try? That would address one of their areas of concern In their writing notebook… (record original?) then revise using the move found in the mentor text They should explain and reflect on the revision process/considerations/how it worked/etc

5 Small Mentors Can be a sentence, paragraph, section, etc.
Grammar/Punctuation in context Specific move (transition, emphasis, parallel structure) Skill (use of evidence) Section (Intro) Use of figurative language Type of Genre
