- Born Atlanta, father & grandfather = prominent preachers
- segregated schools, Morehouse College (black college in Atlanta), Crozer Theological Seminary in PA, Boston University
- Married to Coretta Scott King  2 sons & 2 daughters
- Became preacher at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL  national spotlight as leader of Montgomery Bus Boycott, 1955
- Helped found SCLC
- Wrote “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” 1963
- March on Washington, 1963  delivered “I Have a Dream” speech
- Won Nobel Peace Prize in 1964
- Poor People’s Campaign  moved to Chicago
- Went to Memphis, TN, to support garbage workers’ strike  assassinated on balcony of Lorraine Motel, April 4, 1968
- Today = has a national holiday in his honor;
