2 Greetings from Minnesota in the USA
So lets begin: Greetings from Minnesota! Good Leadership Enterprises – HQ in Minneapolis, MN I was in Jamaica last week…celebrating my 30th Wedding Anniversary While I was FLYING SOUTH to be here…my wife and friends were flying NORTH

3 Winter in Minneapolis To WINTER…Its cold this time of year.

4 My family. My home. It’s cold!
Here is a picture of my family at my home: Tree in the background is 65 feet tall – its an outdoor Christmas Tree, with 6000 lights. Do you mind if I take a SELFIE to send to my family back home?

5 Unlearn Honor to be here: LOVE the subject – Unlearn. Congratulations in making an investment in yourself. What “Unlearn” means to me is this…

6 Unlearn to learn Honor to be here: LOVE the subject – Unlearn. Congratulations in making an investment in yourself. What “Unlearn” means to me is this…

7 Won’t get you there. Marshall Goldsmith
What got you here… Won’t get you there. Marshall Goldsmith What got you here, won’t get you there. These are the words of one of the most famous executive coaches in the world: Marshall Goldsmith –wrote a book by the same title. Lots of messages here: Most powerful message for me – we are all “aspirational people.” We all have an idea in our minds of what’s up “there.” Humbling, and exciting to think that what got you “here” – wont get you “there.” The big question that I hope to answer for you today: What do I need to “unlearn” and “relearn” to get “THERE.”

8 Unlearn Paradigms Ethics and Morals Relationships at work Education
Here are the Unlearn Paradigms for the conference. My job over the next 40 minutes is to bring these concepts alive in the best way I know how. So lets get started!

9 Three Things to Unlearn
How we get work done How we create $ results How we create accountability My expertise is focused How Good Leaders, Create Great Results – and here are the three things I will talk about today:

10 What’s wrong with this picture?

11 How We Get Work Done Its flawed. There is way too much pressure on this rock. If one little thing goes wrong over here…it all falls apart. Another way to think about this... That one heavy rock represents what we call a Superhero leader – someone who wears a superhero cape…and makes himself – or herself – way too important.

12 Unlearn Superhero Leadership
PUT ON THE CAPE:  Don’t you at some level, each of us wants to think of our self as a Superhero leader? We are told at a very young age we can be anything we want to be – aim high, and dream big!! And as our experience grows and our confidence begins to soar…we start to enjoy flying to the rescue…solving problems and attracting a lot of attention. It feels good… let that feeling sink in with a pause…but over time, it wears thin, because it rubs people the wrong way. (45) Unless we are facing an imminent crisis, and we are invited to come to the rescue…Superhero leadership is too risky. My suggestion: we have to unlean, how we think about getting work done…it’s time we hang up our Superhero capes. Instead…we need to get people working together

13 No Superheros! Good leaders working together with good intentions make great things possible! We need to involve, and inform people. It’s the phrase: WORKING TOGETHER that means the most here…we are living in the era of information transparency and we expect collaboration today…these things (iPhone) changed everything. We’ve lost our patience for the “Because I out rank you,” and “I’m the expert here” and “because I said so” style of leadership. Today, we respect leaders who treat us with respect…ask our opinion and involve us in decision-making. Its hard to resist the temptation…sometimes it just feels good to fly around making decisions and rescuing people when they get behind in their work. But that’s what we have to “UNLEARN.” Good leaders do not behave like Superheros.

14 What does this picture say to you?
The next think we need to unlearn is how we think about producing financial results.

15 How We Create Financial Results
When we only focus on Financial Results, people get weary and start to get frayed along the edges. Over time, we all wear thin and start to daydream about a life without the constant financial pressure. There is a better way!

16 There is a better way

17 “He radiates goodness.”
Met “Mike.” As executive coaching assignments go, I interviewed a number of people around Mike: his Board, some colleagues and people on his team. It was the last person I interviewed…his CFO…well-seasoned, salty corporate veteran named Emily who taught me the big lesson that day:  I asked her to explain the situation through her eyes, and she said: “You have to understand, we’ve been in a tailspin around here, started by a group of executives all pursuing their own agendas. Its like we had this purple stink cloud of toxic, selfish energy hanging over everything here. So I asked: why do you think Mike can do the job? She immediately threw her head back and laughed: “Oh that’s easy…He radiates goodness!” What did she say? That was a new one to me: typically, I hear things like: he’s super strategic, great with customers, holds people accountable. But instead, she said he radiates goodness. So I probed for more and she explained:  Mike is a breath of fresh air. He’s only been in charge for about six weeks, and he has us working together again…we’re already feeling like winners! Did I tell you he walks around whistling? She also said he was obsessively competitive had extremely high expectations – but unlike the Superhero leaders who came before him… the team was turning the business around because he helped everyone feel like winners.

18 Ethics & Morals What I learned is that Mike produces excellent financial results by focusing on GOODNESS as both an intention, and an outcome of his leadership. Instead of hammering away on financials only, he takes a broader approach.

19 Goodness Pays Rewarding excellence Living generously
Promoting fairness Spreading positivity We believe that if we create an environment where we are: Rewarding excellence Living generously Promoting fairness Spreading positivity How does

20 How We Create Accountability
The third thing we need to unlearn is how we think about Accountability. My friend Paul Hillen and I are in the process of writing the book: Goodness Pays. As part of the research we are learning some new ideas about Accountability.

21 Accountability Today:
I will work harder if I know you care about me, and you will help me reach my goals.

22 Key Words: Care about me Help me reach my goals
It used to be: you are lucky to have a job. Now its about creating an environment where the best and brightest want to stay and thrive! And the best way we know how to do create that condition is this thing we call The Seven Fs

23 The Seven Fs Wheel Use the tool to increase care & learn about goals
You have this tool on your chair…please find a pen and participate with me. I encourage you to do this – this tool is free. I can send you more.

24 The Seven Fs Faith Family Finances Fitness Friends Fun Future
Invented this concept with my friend Tim Schmidt. Accountability group: wanted to succeed personally and professionally Wrote the book in 2010, sold 22,000 copies. Fun Future

25 Faith Faith: alphabetical
Faith beginning – Fitness in the middle – Future at the end Wheel: Seven Spokes: 1 – 10: measures your Satisfaction. Faith – not easy to talk work: Not asking who you worship, do you worship, why or why not! Faith has a lot to do with how we show up: our mood and tone.

26 Family Family: Picture of my family – mother is 80, son is about to get married. Sometimes its hard: dad died this year – divorced at age 74.

27 Finances How your money funds your priorities:
Asked the question: more than, about as much, or less than…

28 Fitness Anyone under the age of 40? You don’t have a clue about fitness! Turn 50…everything starts to hurt!? Did Yoga last week, legs are sore. Give yourself a score – then I will show you a funny picture…

29 Pizza, beer, and cheeseburgers.
Fat Paul Pizza, beer, and cheeseburgers. This is the funny picture: five years ago Fat Paul – lost 20 pounds since…too much pizza, beer and cheeseburgers and FRENCH FRIES. Trying to be skinny Paul…not easy!

30 Friends When Tim and I first did Seven Fs: 3s on friends.

31 Fun Favorite definition: part of my life that is playful and joyful! How many of you would describe your work as “playful and joyful?”

32 Future Future: The hope we have for ourselves and others.
OK: lets connect the dots…and make a shape. That’s the shape of your Seven Fs Wheel…The question is:

33 Will Your Seven Fs Wheel Roll? Will your Seven Fs Wheel roll?
Please turn to the person next to you and explain your Seven Fs Wheel.

34 Relationships How are the Seven Fs alive at work?
Relationships: more than just doing our job. It takes a full mind-body-soul commitment – from both our personal and professional parts of our lives. If you want to be a good leaders, we need to unlearn how we think about relationships at work.

35 Unlearn Paradigms Ethics and Morals Relationships at work Education

36 What we concentrate on grows!
Education What we concentrate on grows! The final Unlearn Paradigm is about Education: Here’s the most important thing about education on the job: What we concentrate on grows! Be careful of concentrating on problems Be careful of concentrating on poor performance…because what we concentrate on grows!

37 The most important decision we make…

38 Be Happy Is to be happy. We need to learn to be happy with our work – there are three trillion people on the planet, and most of them would trade places with us instantly. Whatever is not getting done. Whatever struggles you have. Whatever relationships aren’t working…it will go better if you first decide to be happy!
