4 Germany Chooses…The Schlieffen Plan.
The Plan: German spies said it would be 92 days before Russia could mobilize. 1. Attack France and conquer it in 30 days. 2. Regroup and send most of the troops by train to the Eastern Front to Attack Russia (take days). 3. Attack and defeat Russia before they are able to mobilize. BRILLIANT! …..here’s how it goes down…

5 FAKE ATTACK. Germany holds a feint (fake attack) on Frances Eastern border while the Main attack force heads north through Belgium.

6 France Responds. FRANCE BELIEVES IT IS A DIVERSION AND ATTACKS PROVINCES TO THE SOUTH OF BELGIUM

7 German Attack… GERMANY HOLDS UP OUTSIDE OF PARIS AND FRANCE RESPONDS AND HOLDS GERMAN ADVANCE AT THE BATTLE OF MARNE

8 THIS SAVES FRANCE… How? Discuss with a neighbor: Speculate how do you think a TAXI is responsible for saving Paris….use evidence in your explanation.

Propaganda. Posters always showed men ready and willing to fight. They never showed the boredom of the trenches or actual fighting taking place. Why do you think the government showed no fighting?
