4 Meet Syeed and Sunil They are brothers who are 13 and 15 years old and live in Kathmandu in Nepal. Tell the children a little bit about the brothers: Syeed is 13 and Sunil is 15 and they live in Kathmandu, Nepal. They travelled from India to Kathmandu with their family to get work. Neither of them go to school as the can’t speak Nepali. Instead they work all day.

5 What do you think this is?
Show the children the pictures ask them what they think it is. Explain to them that this is a slum outside of Nepal, it’s typical of the sort of place where Syeed and Sunil live. Explain to the children that the people who live here are very poor and build their houses out of anything they can find – suggest them to name some of the materials that the houses are made out of; wood, plastic, cloth, corrugated metal. Talk about the area in which the village is built – on marshland, open to the elements – what problems can the children see with this village: Suggest flooding, house prone to washing away; note the open sewer running through the middle of the village – contamination when it floods; everyday health and hygiene. Talk about the house that the boys live in; one single room, with typically a family of 8 living there; no running water, probably no toilet. They cook using kerosene which is dangerous and can cause breathing difficulties; if they can’t afford the erosene they have to cook over open fires; they endure freezing temperatures in the winter.

6 Syeed and Sunil’s Story
Ask the children what they think this is and perhaps why they think you are showing it to them. This is where the two brothers work. Each morning they set off from their home at 7am, they have to walk to work which is 15kms away. They can’t get on the bus as the bus driver won’t let them on. On their walk to work they collect rubbish from the road side and bins, things that can be recycled and reused, things they can sell. Where could this be?

7 Syeed and Sunil at work Discuss with the children what the potential dangers are that the brothers face whilst at work. The work that these boys do is dangerous, they sift through bins containing broken glass and sharp metal which often injures them. When they arrive at the waste dump they would spend the day sifting through more rubbish and try to sell it before they set out on their 15km return journey home. Workers like Syeed and Sunil are know as waste pickers and have been outcast by society. This is the reason the bus driver won’t let them on the bus again and they have to walk home. Ask the children what they think would help the boys during their working day… What dangers do you think the boys face in their job? What do you think would help them?

8 Practical Action working with Syeed and Sunil
Making workers safer Practical Action began working with waste pickers in Kathmandu to help make them more safe while they are at work and to help them to earn more money. Can you see what Syeed and Sunil are wearing that might make them safer at work? The overalls they have on keep them safe and clean. They also have gloves, boots, masks and hats. These protect them from harm and from the elements.

9 Restoring pride! Discuss what children see as the main differences between their lives and the boys lives. With the money that people just like you have raised, Practical Action was able to help Syeed and Sunil. Not only did they ensure that the boys could be safe at work, but they worked with the community to begin to change attitudes towards the waste pickers. Syeed and Sunil can now ride on the bus as the uniform has earned them respect. They now have a new found feeling of self esteem.
