3 What is the Civil Service
The Civil Service helps the Government of the day develop and carry out its policies. Civil Servants work on a diverse range of things from education, health and public safety to border control and cyber security. This work can include: Shaping healthcare, collecting the money that pays for Uks public services, Presentation title - edit in Header and Footer

5 UK Annual Civil Service Employment Survey time series, 2008 to 2016
Figure 1 shows the number of Civil Service employees from 2008 to At 31 March 2016, there were 418,343 civil servants, down 15,469 (3.6%) on 31 March Since 2008, the Civil Service workforce has decreased by 106,814 (20.3%) from 525,157. Presentation title - edit in Header and Footer

6 UK Civil Service employment at 31 March 2016, distribution by age and gender
More than 80% of civil servants were in the 30 to 59 age group on 31 March Since 31 March 2015 there has been an increase in age band 16 to 19 of 330 (27.5%) and age band 20 to 29 of 2,590 (6.5%). All other age bands showed a decrease in employment. There were more women than men in the 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49 and 50 to 59 age bands. 7 UK Civil Service employment at 31 March 2016, distribution by region
On 31 March 2016, there were 43,050 Civil Service employees in Scotland, 31,170 in Wales and 3,530 in Northern Ireland. The English region with the highest number of civil servants on 31 March 2016 was London with 78,230 (18.7%) employees. The lowest was the East Midlands with 19,420 (4.6%); this is shown in figure 6. The number of civil servants in Wales increased by 1.2%. All other regions showed a decrease in employment, the largest decreases (excluding overseas) being West Midlands which decreased by 3,260 (10.9%) and South East which decreased by 3,560 (8.3%). The number of civil servants employed overseas decreased by 490 (10.3%). North East accounts for 7% of civil service workforce 28370 Presentation title - edit in Header and Footer

8 Government Departments by Distribution in the North East

9 Civil Service Departments in the North East
1.4% 33% 39% 14% 1% 1.23% 2% In the North East the Ministry of Justice in the region primarily consist of the National Offenders Management Service with the Courts and Tribunals Service and Legal Aid Agency comprising the rest. DBEIS in the region is mainly comprised of the Land Registry with a small presence from the insolvency service and ACAS. DEFRA is mainly the Rural Payments Agency Home Office ahs a presence in Durham at the Passport Agency. 14 Who can Apply Anyone over the age of 16
Need to have at least 5 GCSE’s at grade C and above including English Language and Maths (or equivalent) If you have a degree then you won’t be able to apply for the Fast Track For two of the fast track schemes you wil need additional qualifications. The Project delivery scheme requires 2 A levels at Grade D and above, or equivalent. For the Digital and Technology you will need 2 A levels at grade C and above in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Presentation title - edit in Header and Footer

15 Fast Track schemes Business: Commercial: Finance: Digital and Technology: Project Delivery: The business role as an apprentice is often to support collaboration and help bring teams together. For example, you could be organising meetings or managing communications. A significant number of the business apprenticeship roles are also dynamic and customer-facing. 5 GCSEs A* to C including English language and maths (or equivalent) Commercial professionals work on some of the most challenging and interesting projects in government. There’s a wide range of experience available in the different posts, from procuring prisons for the Ministry of Justice to buying battleships for the Ministry of Defence. 5 GCSEs A* to C including English language and maths (or equivalent) Finance: The programme offers a unique opportunity to make a difference, to contribute to strong financial management within government and to help make sure that we deliver value for money for the taxpayers. 5 GCSEs A* to C including English language and maths (or equivalent) This Fast Track apprenticeship offers an excellent opportunity to learn valuable digital and technical skills. The roles vary from development and service management to testing and support. 2 A levels A* to C in STEM subjects and 5 GCSEs A* to C including English language and maths (or equivalent) The project delivery apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to work on some of the most fast-paced and exciting projects being undertaken in the UK today. 2 A levels A* to D in any subject and 5 GCSEs A* to C including English language and maths (or equivalent) Presentation title - edit in Header and Footer

16 How to apply Stage 1: Register. Register your details and complete 4 online tests Stage 2: Attend the Assessment Centre Online test are verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, situational judgement tests and a competency based questionnaire. 18 Fast Stream Graduate Leadership Development Programme
Fast Stream 2017 Applications open 29 September – 30 November Applicants must first register and select one of several fast stream options. Most Streams are open to graduates with a 2:2 in any degree discipline. Online Questionnaires E-tray Video Interview Fast Stream Assessment Centre Final Selection Assessments Online;:7 Days to complete this but not timed. Need to complete two questionnaires that consist of several questions to test behavioural style and situational judgement E-tray: 7 days to complete. This online exercise requires you to use your decision making skills to respond to a series of s, given a choice f options. 80 minutes to complete this. Video Interview. Respond via your webcam/device camera to a number of pre-recorded interview questions about your motivation and strengths. Fast Stream Assess. If you pass the online tests you will be invited to attend an assessment centre. This wil consist of a leadership exercise ,a group exercise and an analysis exercise.
