Goal – students will understand that there are different generations working in the workplace and there are skills needed to work together.

Watch the video and think about… Who are they? What do you notice about each generation? What has caused so many generations to be in the workplace at once? How can they work in harmony? People live longer, thus need more money People take better care of themselves, thus can work longer People want to work longer People are supporting their “adult” children longer because costs are so high

11 Article Activity Working in groups of four, go to my website and read the article entitled, Generations Working Together, and fill in the graphic organizer. Each member of the group should be responsible for one of the generations and share at least two pieces of information about that generation with the group. Each member of the group should be ready to out to the class something that they took away from the article.

18 Lego Activity In pairs, choose a designer and a customer
Sitting back-to-back, the designer designs an object for both to construct. The customer is not allowed to talk or ask questions.

Turn to face one another and compare the objects. Discuss what you noticed about the process & outcome

Workers in the 21st Century will average 5-9 different career changes. Job longevity will average 4 years. 70% of the careers students today will hold in the future do not exist at the present time. Data shows a majority of new jobs will be in the service sector. Example: Development of an integrated internet lead to the development of new improved software platforms which run on Apps. Retirement of Baby Boomers Scientific Advances Baby Boomers who are retiring take with them the knowledge and skills necessary to their current positions. Thus leaving a skills shortage in the work environment. Baby Boomer generation will require services such as financial planning & Health care. These two sectors will increase rapidly over the next ten years. Economic hardships – Current events (Eygpt) Governments will need to be restructure, laws enforced, etc…. Natural Disasters or tragedies – People need to rebuild. 9/11 tragedy brought an increase in security and technology sectors. Think airport security
