1 Article: The Promise of BioFuels: Hype or Real Solution?
Take about 15 minutes to read the article silently. As you read, highlight or circle pro’s and con’s of using biomass based fuels. Objective: I can explain why carbon forms so many compounds that are used for fuel. I can research the pro’s and con’s of fossil fuels. Agenda: BioFuel Article Carbon Gallery Walk Carbon Notes and Article Fossil Fuel Research Exit Slip: fossil fuels #1

2 Article: The Promise of BioFuels: Hype or Real Solution?
Con

3 Activity: Where’s the Carbon?
Gallery Walk Activity: There are six stations around the room. You will have about 3 minutes per station. Record the information about the items in your graphic organizer. When you have recorded the chemical formula for each item, return to your seat and complete Part 2 (filling in column C)

4 Abiotic vs. Biotic Forms of Carbon
Abiotic = Related to non-living components or factors in a natural system. Biotic = Related to living components or factors in a natural system. On your graphic organizer, label each form of carbon as either biotic or abiotic. Discuss and justify your choice to your neighbor.

5 Think Pair Share Were you surprised that so many everyday items are carbon-based? What surprised you most? Which item in the gallery walk was not carbon- based? Why is carbon part of so many compounds? The glass is not carbon based – it is Silicon based – right below carbon on the periodic table.

6 I. Our Friend Carbon Because of carbon’s unique bonding characteristics, this allows it to form repeating structures. Large biological molecules are just repeating structures of smaller carbon units.

7 Carbon and Energy Many fuel sources are carbon-based. Some are considered renewable and others are considered non-renewable. Carbon based fuels provide energy by combustion reactions.

8 O-Chem! Hydrocarbons Focus Question: What is the relationship between oil and gas and living things? sources-/oil-and-gas/oil-and-gas- deposits/formation-of-deposits-8.html Really funny video about carbon – 10 minutes:

9 Video Investigation: Climate Change: Earth’s Giant Game of Tetris
Focus Questions: What is the green house effect? What are fossil fuels and what is their connection to global warming?

10 Organic Chemistry Reading Activity
Expectations: Read individually or with a partner Answer all questions on a separate sheet of paper. Use complete sentences. Tools: Article, Notes Day 1, Textbook Optional: p.704 #8, 15; p. 706 #43, p. 742 #33, 34; p. 743 #43 – 48 (reading graphs)

11 Fossil Fuels Research To begin your research about fossil fuels, use this blendspace lesson: Record your arguments, facts, and evidence in your project graphic organizer.

12 Exit Slip http://tinyurl.com/boonchem24
Use your notes. Take your time. This exit slip is graded on two new standards.
